Watermelon production

I am trying to grow watermelon for the second time. Last year, the fruit got to about 1/2 expected size and shriveled up. I may have over-watering so this year I'll be monitoring that more closely. My question is....last year and so far this year, it seems that there is only one fruit per vine. If one flower has been pollinated, no others will turn into fruit. Is this normal? Thanks in advance ..read more

We bought a dwarf peach tree from a fella who said it would produce that year (it was 6 ft tall and 1 inch truck with branches). It was in a 7 gal pot when bought and I moved it to a bigger containter that first year. It did blossom, but no fruit. I moved it to the ground the next year and again it grew larger, looked good, blossomed and no fruit. We figured it may be in shock still from the move. This year, its little bigger and blossomed and now we are seeing 6-8 small peaches on the... Read more ..read more

Aphids !!!

Twice over winter/early spring I sprayed my fruit trees with a commercial winter wash, to try to prevent wretched aphids on my apples, plums and pears. It was correctly applied. I also gave each tree a blood fish and bonemeal feed. They're back! Especially on the Bramley which was so affected last year that we had no apples, except tiny marbles. The plums were so rotten we had to throw them out. Sick of rotten fruit after careful pruning and spraying! What am I doing wrong? Little... Read more ..read more

Hello! We have been faithfully caring for our tomato plants since we started them from seed (with a grow light) several months ago, but all of a sudden have hit some trouble. We had been dealing with aphids, and had been just removing them by hand. I’ve included a couple pictures of how the tomatoes looked a week ago. We wanted a more efficient solution, so we recently sprayed them with Neem oil (pictured below). We sprayed in the evening, and also pruned the lower branches at the same... Read more ..read more

If anyone knows about it then i would be thankful for the help ..read more

Growing Papaya & Mission Olive in Zone 8b (Southeast U.S)

The local Walmart's in my area have started selling papaya and olive trees, which I had never seen before. I thought it was pretty interesting so I bought one of each. The papaya is already around 2-3' tall and the Mission Olive is around that same height. I have experience growing hardy palms and veggies in my area but these two trees are a first. Where I'm at we usually experience our first frost of the year around mid-late November. What can I realistically expect growth-wise out of... Read more ..read more

Apples - is this fire blight?

NC near Raleigh. I bought & planted 2 new apple trees about 8 weeks ago. Both were in flower. Since then, all of the flowering spurs have died on both trees - not just the flowers, but the leaves on the spurs have all browned but remain on the tree. I've also had a couple of new growth shoots curl over & brown the same way. Both trees are otherwise putting out new growth on all branches. It seems like it's new growth that was already on the trees when I planted them that is affected. I do... Read more ..read more
