Community members are invited to join the Juneteenth Committee, the City of Port Arthur and Shane Sinegal, Precinct 3 Commissioner, at the Jefferson County Sub-Courthouse to raise the Juneteenth Flag at 525 Lakeshore Drive.
The events gets underway at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Every year Sinegal’s Office brings recognition for Juneteenth as the day slavery finally ended in the United States. June 19, 1865, is when the last group of enslaved people was informed of their liberation in Texas, two and a half years after the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Groves Police Department officers made the following arrests and responded to the following calls from May 22 to May 28:
May 22
Jamal Mishaw, 21, was arrested for warrants and failed to identify giving false/fictitious information in the 5300 block of Gulfway Drive.
Juwon Dancy, 32, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and warrants in the 5200 block of Gulfway Drive.
May 23
Kenneth Mayfield, 30, was arrested for warrants and violation of protective order in the 2600 block of Bernhard.

Wildflower Design and Events celebrated a ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration this week in Groves.
Owners Katie and David Zghaib welcomed family, friends, city officials and supporters to their new 4320 Lincoln Avenue location.
The Thursday fun was boosted with a little help from the Groves Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Center.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024 and to the students who completed the school year. Thank you to the teachers, coaches, support staff, administrators, school resource officers, crossing guards, etc. who helped navigate this school year.

County Judge Jeff Branick’s office announced Friday morning that the beach advisory previously issued Wednesday for McFaddin and Sea Rim beaches is withdrawn.
That advisory was issued after water samples collected were found to have elevated levels of the Enterococcus bacteria.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers anything more than 104 colonies to be unsafe.
At present the levels are considered safe, county leaders said.
