A woman was found deceased in a home early this morning (June 1) and a law enforcement agency’s violent crimes unit is investigating the death. Shortly after 4 a.m. today the Statesville Police Department responded to a call regarding a deceased person inside a residence located in the 500 block of Hickory Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found 33-year-old Shelbie Smith of Statesville, deceased inside her home. Carley Canzoneri has been announced as the newest Lenoir-Rhyne Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach, following Head Coach Joanna Fennema from Columbus State University. “I am thrilled to have Carley on our staff,” Fennema said. “She has an extremely high soccer IQ, and she was a formidable collegiate standout. That along with her competitive drive and positive energy will be invaluable to our program. The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 4-1 Friday evening on the road. Hickory pulled away with a pair of runs in the final frame to seal the win. Hickory scored first in the third inning. With Yosy Galan on base and no one out, Benjamin Blackwell hit a grounder to the shortstop who committed a throwing error, allowing Galan to score. The Crawdads picked up another run in the top of the sixth inning. With one away, Luis Mieses doubled. Ian Moller singled placing runners on the corners. Newton Man Jailed on Fugitive Warrant from Texas

40-year-old Marcos Arias-Tulio, whose address is listed as Government Drive in Newton, was served with a felony fugitive warrant Thursday (May 30). He is wanted in Harris County, Texas for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon or firearm. He is listed as a “federal inmate serving” and has been in the Catawba County Detention Facility since Tuesday (May 28). Arias-Tulio is being held without bond and has also been placed on a detainer for Immigration & Customs Enforcement. An appearance in District Court was set for June 6 in Newton. Lincoln County Sheriff Reports Scam Calls

On May 31, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls from citizens reporting an attempted scam in which the caller was impersonating an Officer. Callers said they were contacted by someone claiming to be a Sheriff’s Office employee informing them they had outstanding warrants. The scammer went on to say the warrants could be resolved by paying with gift cards, Venmo, or Apple Pay. The scammer is using the name of an actual Sheriff’s Office employee. Granite Falls Woman Charged with Trafficking in Heroin

35-year-old Kendra Leigh McQuinn of Oran Yount Lane in Granite Falls was arrested Wednesday (May 29) by Caldwell County Sheriff’s Officers. She was charged with four felonies: trafficking in heroin or opium, two counts possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver schedule two controlled substance, and maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substance. McQuinn was jailed under $100,000 secured bond in the Caldwell County Detention Center. She was scheduled to appear in District Court on June 12. 56-year-old Gregory Mansfield of Gamecroft Street in Lenoir was arrested Wednesday (May 29) by Caldwell County Sheriff’s Officers. He was charged with felony interfering with an electronic monitoring device and misdemeanor assault on a female. Mansfield was jailed under no bond in the Caldwell County Detention Center. Elderly Hiddenite Man Dies in Friday A.M. Crash

An accident this morning (May 31) in Alexander County has claimed the life of a Hiddenite man. The deceased is 80-year-old James D. Durmire. At about 8:50 a.m. today, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene on U.S. Highway 64 near Boston Road. A 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Mr. Durmire was traveling east on U.S. 64 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer. The kickoff times and accompanying network designations for five App State football games this fall, including the first four of the 2024 season, were announced Thursday. The Mountaineers’ season-opening home game against ETSU on Aug. 31 will begin at 3:30 p.m. and be shown on ESPN+. Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced this week that it will begin issuing new driver licenses, permits and identification cards featuring the latest in card security design and construction specifically intended to combat fraud. The state’s new credential is a 100% polycarbonate card that is personalized using laser engraving technology.
