Hello everyone! I present to you my two latest knives. This hunter design had great acceptance in the last batch that I've made so I decided to make two with a different finish than I'm used to make. These two knives have a 4 3/4" blade made from 5160 brazed guard and a beautiful dark phosphate finish, which protects the blade from corrosion. Handles are made from selected very dark brazilian rosewood. It comes with a leather sheath, a custom presentation box, and a handkerchief and a... Read more ..read more

Like the title says, does hardening a piece of steel (guard, fitting, spacer) have any impact on the finish provided by using Birchwood Casey Cold Blue? I'm working on a hidden tang and was thinking I'd try that as a finish on the guard and spacer ..read more

Hey, let's talk about belt brands and their respective quality/price ratios So, I've been looking to get some sandpaper from trugrit and since there's several of the same products in the same price range it's getting confusing. I've found this old thread that kind of covers VSM as being good http://knifedogs.com/archive/index.php/t-26810.html Are Hermes and Merit any good ? They have insane prices on all the belts such as : 36grit ceramics 5$ merit... Read more ..read more

Blade Polishing Question

I'm working on a few Axis Lock folders, and am struggling with getting the right satin finish to my blades. I create my bevels before heat-treat with 120 grit. Then I clean up my bevels and plunge cuts after heat treat with 180, 220, 320, and polish with 500 and 600 grit. I alternate between grits by hand sanding to make sure I get all of the scratch marks out. I've used surface conditioning belts in the past, but never completely satisfied with the results. Sometimes they leave the blade... Read more ..read more

Question from the newest noob. Is this normal or a flaw?

I'm not a bladesmith but I recently started searching for a chef's knife. I found one online (and I'm really sorry I didn't find this forum first) and bought it. When I received it, I noticed what looked like grinding marks on the one side near the handle. Then I looked even closer and saw a very small crack on the handle. I contacted the company I bought it from and was told that is normal for a hand-forged blade. I was also told that the reason for the crack is because it had a knot... Read more ..read more
