After a typical deluge of a May Bank Holiday, the first chance I got this week for a long walk in glorious weather was Wednesday. My Mum was visiting so we decided a new sniffs Digby Day and walk and a lunch it was. As the heat cranked up a notch (not complaining!) Spring is finally in the air after an extremely wet March/April. The bluebells have sprung slightly earlier this year so we didn't want to miss the fantastic display at Micheldever Woods, so it was a fabulous opportunity for a dog walk and lunch with my mum and her friend. There are lots of different walking routes in Micheldever Woods, with ancient woodland to fir trees, and an archeological trail highlighting Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age farm steads, but it is Spring when it is at its most glorious. Another reason we stayed at Bredon Vale Campsite was its proximity to Straftord-Upon-Avon as well as the Malvern Hills. My son has just learnt his first Shakespeare text 'The Tempest' and really enjoyed it so an educational outing was on the cards for today. Whats more Shakespeare's Birthplace Trust and the three sites your ticket gives you entry to are all dog friendly, which was a bonus for us as we've not left Digby for a whole day and didn't want to. It's the second week of the Easter Holidays and we are staying at Bredon Vale Camping and Caravanning in Norton, Worcester. We chose this site as it was ideally situated between the Malvern Hills and Stratford Upon Avon to visit Shakespeares Birthplace as my son has just studied at school his first piece of Shakespeare text. We have just upgraded to a caravan, primarily as our boys are getting bigger and we now have the dog, but we have kept our camper van for towing for now as I couldn't bear to part with him! Ahead of our holiday later in half term we wanted a quick test run to tow the van before we head off further afield later on. Our spring equinox walk this year took us Dunbridge in Hampshire, where we planned to walk around the Mottisfont estate and then go for some lunch after. We parked at the Mill Arms as we planned to finish here. The initial stages of the walk took us past the railway station to the signpost to Mottisfont Abbey. We are still preparing ourselves for taking trips in the van with a Dog now, but as a test to see how Digby does away from home and his crate, we took a weekend trip to Shaldon in Devon and stayed in a lovely Air BnB that was perfectly situated called Paddle Cottage. We arrived late Friday afternoon, after unpacking we decided to head to the Teign Estuary to stretch all of our legs. It's half term so I took the kids back to Windsor, the last time we were here was laying flowers when the Queen passed away, this time we wanted to go into Windsor Castle itself and now visit the resting place of the late Queen. I love the cosiness of Windsor with the castle nestled at its centre. The original castle was built shortly after the Norman invasion for William the conquerer to protect the Western approach to London. I wanted to find a walk with a bridge as the star feature of the walk, and I didn't have to go far to get a really good one! I cannot believe I haven't done this walk before but there is a first for everything. Starting in Winchester, we headed down to the path next to the River Itchen opposite the City Mill to walk to College Walk to continue on the Itchen Navigation Path that leads you to St Catherine's Hill. We are starting to be able to get up to a 2 mile walk now with Digby, whilst this is still a little small for me, it is plenty for him so I am adapting until he's a bigger boy. However, what I do love to do is take Digby on new walks to get the new sniffs and, this one also introduced Digby to cows for the first time. As short dog walks go this one is great, there is a car park at the foot of the hill next to Handlebar cafe so a nice place to grab some refreshment after.
