GRANBY — Few physical reminders remain in this unassuming mountain town 20 years after a rampage by an aggrieved muffler shop owner attracted worldwide attention. Marvin Heemeyer — convinced he’d been wronged by town leaders — plotted for more than a year, crafting and installing a 40,000-pound steel and concrete enclosure atop a bulldozer. He then smashed his makeshift tank into 13 buildings in a one-man act of revenge and retribution. Tread marks are still engraved in the pavement in front of the Sky-Hi News building, which Heemeyer collapsed with his 85-ton armored Komatsu bulldozer on ..read more

Dear Amy: On this recent Mother’s Day, my 50+ daughter once again asked to bring a new boyfriend to our home for a small family holiday gathering she’d been invited to. We had never met him. It has been a pattern for her to date someone for only a few weeks, want to bring him to a special family event or holiday, when he is a complete stranger to us, and then break up with him a few weeks later. I have said yes to this in the past, but the situation wasn’t comfortable for me and other family members, including her adult children. This time I said no ..read more

Colorado’s 4th Congressional District special election debate at the Grizzly Rose on Saturday featured two political novices, a guy who doesn’t want to win and an empty chair set aside for the presumed favorite in the race. Republican Greg Lopez was a no-show at the debate, sponsored by the Republican Women of Weld and the Lincoln Club of Colorado, a decision libertarian candidate Hannah Goodman called a travesty. “I disapprove of taking your ball and going home when things don’t seem to be going your way,” she said to a crowd of 200 or so packed into the venerable country-western bar in Adams ..read more

BROOMFIELD — Past fields of yellow wildflowers, tall grass and prairie dog burrows, an Adams County geology teacher, four of his students and the Broomfield mayor huddled around the fossilized footprint of a horned dinosaur that roamed this land some 70 million years ago. “To have this in our own backyard,” Mayor Guyleen Castriotta said. “You can’t beat it.” The Friday afternoon field trip was the result of Northglenn High School geology teacher Kent Hups stumbling across dinosaur fossils about three years ago while out scouting. Kent Hups, a science instructor at Northglenn High School ..read more

New Colorado tax credit could lift 50,000 children out of poverty, is latest to tap TABOR surplus
Canon City Daily Record
by Nick Coltrain

Boasting that child poverty in Colorado would soon be cut nearly in half, Gov. Jared Polis on Friday signed a large new tax credit for low-income families into law. The ceremony put an underline on a legislative session that featured state policymakers looking again and again to the state surplus to flatten inequalities. Lawmakers passed dozens of new tax credits this year that tapped into massive revenues the state couldn’t keep and otherwise would have to return through refund checks. The new family affordability tax credit that received Polis’ signature is by far the largest individual tax ..read more

Stephen Battaglio | Los Angeles Times (TNS) When ABC’s enduring medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” made its debut in March 2005, Netflix was still a DVD-by-mail company. There were plenty of pagers but not an iPhone in sight when viewers met Meredith Grey and the show’s first set of surgical interns. This week, “Grey’s” finishes its 20th season with apparently no end in sight for the crew at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Star Ellen Pompeo announced at Walt Disney Co.’s recent advertiser presentation that “Grey’s Anatomy” is the Burbank, California-based entertainment giant’s most streamed program ..read more
