Reporting spam

Well, today was the most spam I can recall in a long time.  Took quite a while to clean it up.  Several of you have been very helpful by reporting.  Had a thought today that might improve your experience.  I would like to PM half a dozen or so of you with the thought that we / you could divide and conquer. Split days and times when you report and when another member of the group does. It would reduce time you spend and duplication of effort as well.  If that sounds like the start of a plan, and you don't mind others included in a PM group knowing of your participation ..read more

Improving mirror lens image contrast

Here is an article on a way to reduce stray light in catadioptrics and reflecting telescopes, which improves contrast markedly. https://retrofocal.com/articles/improving-mirror-lens-image-quality/ The synopsis is that mirror lenses and reflecting telescopes show the sensor a reflection of itself, which hazes the image, but the spot that forms that reflection doesn’t participate in making the image, so it can be blackened.   ..read more

Do you realize that whenever you post something on PN it stays there forever online.  I have actually gone back to the year 2003 when I first starting posting here and found some of my own posts !  This comes in handy because I have some really old equipment which  I forgot how to use. It also made me think about taking my posts a little more seriously. Like it or not, a lot of people Google questions they may have about a certain piece of equipment. After the search, up comes a bunch of posts related to the subject on their screen. Some of these posts were actually written by P ..read more

Removing yellow tint with UV light from radioactive lenses: Sharing personal experiences

Here's an account of my personal experiences, in case you are in a similar situation: I put a few weekly hours in a local camera shop checking and cleaning up old film equipment the shop receives. A while back we got two very interesting lenses; a Canon 35mm f/2 S.S.C "Concave" and a Konica Hexanon AR 57mm f/1.2. Both lenses are quite valuable, but both were also severely yellowed/browned to the point where light transmission must have been reduced by around 2 stops. Color photography would definitely also be very problematic. Glass yellowing is a typical phenomenon in lenses made with glass c ..read more

Goof in new "Civil War" movie

The recently released movie "Civil War" imagines a near-future armed conflict when a U.S. president refuses to leave office after his constitutionally limited second term. It's a violent and controversial film on which I won't comment here. However, I did chuckle at a photography-related goof in one scene. Two of the main characters are female photojournalists. One is a middle-aged veteran of many foreign conflicts, and the other is an ambitious young newcomer. The experienced photographer uses a modern digital camera. The young one shoots black-and-white film in a Nikon SLR (FA or FM2 I think ..read more
