With construction still about a year away, Caltrans officials are urging the public to weigh in on what will be a massive project to install a new bridge road deck on the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro.
With the extended 90-day public comment period ending July 15, Caltrans engineers conducted an in-person informational hearing on Thursday, June 13, at Peck Park in San Pedro, drawing a number of suggestions centered around the alternative construction and closure schedules the agency is still weighing.

Long Beach has picked out their venues that will host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, another step as the city prepares to welcome the Games.
The City Council approved a venue-use guarantee with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Summer Games during its meeting on Tuesday, June 11.
Long Beach’s venues include the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center area, Marina Green and Alamitos Beach, the waterfront around the Belmont Shore beach area, and Marine Stadium.

The Port of Los Angeles moved 752,893 cargo units in May, about 3% shy of last year’s numbers for the same month.
Despite the May numbers being a tick down, when combined with the data from the previous four months, they represent a “really good start” to the year, POLA Executive Director Gene Seroka said during his monthly virtual news conference on Wednesday, June 12. Seroka also pointed to continued consumer spending as a positive economic indicator.

“There is an old saying,” longtime numismatics dealer Bob Campbell says, “that gold brings men together like fire in a dark room.”
Unfortunately for Campbell, gold also attracts thieves.
So Campbell is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who slipped his hand into a defective display case at the Long Beach Expo on Thursday, June 6, and stole an unusually large, 27-ounce gold nugget that Campbell had priced at $82,000.

The frightened A Line light-rail passenger didn’t utter a word.
While riding the train between the Washington and Firestone stations in South Los Angeles, the young woman showed LA Metro Ambassador Shaani McNeil a message on her phone that read, “I believe a man is following me and I need help.”
McNeil took out her work phone and typed a response: “Where are you going?’

The Los Angeles harbor commission this week approved a $2.6 billion Port of LA budget for the upcoming fiscal year, with spending set to go toward ongoing environmental initiatives and waterfront access improvements, among other expenditures.
The plan factors in 9.1 million anticipated TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units, the industry’s measurement of cargo containers), which would be a modest increase of 2% over the current fiscal year’s adopted budget. Athletes from across the region will gather in Long Beach this weekend to compete in the Special Olympics Southern California’s Summer Games.
The Summer Games is the championship for the Special Olympics Southern California spring training season, according to a press release from the organization.
