CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) - The Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT) hosted a public hearing at their headquarters Friday, and more than 50 people showed up to voice their concerns. The biggest proposal pitched by KRT Executive Director Sean Hill was to eliminate low-performing bus routes that tend to have fewer passengers and travel outside of Charleston city limits, such as routes to Sissonville, Cross Lanes, and Elkview. MINGO COUNTY, WV (WOWK) - One year ago, tragedy struck the coalfields of Mingo County when a West Virginia State Police Trooper lost his life serving his community. On June 2, 2023, WVSP Trooper Sgt. Cory Maynard responded to a shooting on Beech Creek Road near Matewan in Mingo County. While responding to the call, Maynard was shot during an ambush. He and the victim of the initial shooting were rushed from the scene for medical treatment as the hours-long manhunt for the suspect began. Maynard succumbed to his injuries later that night. CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) - The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office says two of the state's volunteer fire departments were recently forced to temporarily close. According to the WVSFMO, the closures were the result of workers' compensation issues. Officials say the first closure happened at the Mason Volunteer Fire Department in Mason County between May 28 and May 30 due to a "lapse in their workers' comp coverage." CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) - An Ohio woman was stopped at West Virginia International Yeager Airport for having a loaded gun, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The TSA says the incident happened May 31, 2024, involving a woman from Willow Wood, Ohio, which is in Lawrence County. TSA agents found the firearm in her carry-on bag and said it was loaded with six bullets.
