GROSSE TETE — A passenger ferry began service Friday across the Port Allen Lock in western Iberville Parish, a week after a vessel hit a nearby draw bridge on a foggy morning and knocked the span out of service.
The six-passenger ferry is scheduled to run each morning and evening until the bridge carrying La. 77 is repaired or replaced. Road crews have estimated that the draw bridge could be closed for months.
The waterway was reopened after the damaged draw bridge was moved out of the way.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Jayden Daniels signed his rookie contract with the Washington Commanders on Friday, the next step in becoming the team’s franchise quarterback.
The Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU was the second pick in the NFL draft. As a result, the contract is worth $37.75 million for four years with a $24.3 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option for the 2028 season.

BATON ROUGE - United States Postal Service, or USPS, retail locations will be closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery except for holiday premium Priority Mail Express on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
Regular mail delivery and locations will operate at normal times Thursday, June 20.

NAPOLEONVILLE - A Donaldsonville man was arrested on felony aggravated assault after he allegedly stalked a complainant and brandished a firearm outside of his vehicle's window.
The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office arrested Raymond Jerry Riley, 66, after the aforementioned incident on May 6 where he drove by the complainant's house, brandished his firearm outside the window and yelled at him. The complainant said Riley previously stalked him and his family, which APSO confirmed.

BATON ROUGE - Four people, including a 16-year-old, were arrested after brandishing weapons with a machine gun converter device and having plans to ambush and kill police officers, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
BRPD said it investigated three suspects after they consistently posted firearms equipped with machine gun conversion devices on their social media accounts. During the investigation, detectives also learned of a plan to ambush and kill Baton Rouge police officers.

BATON ROUGE — U.S. Rep. Garret Graves said Friday he will not seek re-election to Congress.
Louisiana lawmakers this year sacrificed Graves' seat after federal courts told the state to create a second minority-majority district. Their mapmaking effort involved protecting seats for House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
Graves, a five-term congressman, was also targeted for his opposition to Gov. Jeff Landry in last year's election.

GONZALES — A Baton Rouge police officer and his wife were arrested on domestic abuse charges, police said Friday.
Solomon Ona, 37, and Tarleshia Atkins, 34, were each booked for domestic abuse battery after being arrested around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday following a disturbance at the couple's Gonzales home.
They were each released from the Ascension Parish Jail on a $2,500 per person bond the same day.
Ona has been a Baton Rouge police officer since 2012. The department also recognized him for saving a life during a 2015 awards banquet, the department's Facebook shows.

BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Police arrested a man Friday for attempted murder he allegedly shot another man multiple times near a Spanish Town Road apartment complex.
Anthony Williams, 27, was booked by police for attempted second-degree murder for the Thursday night shooting.
According to police, Williams shot at the victim multiple times while the victim was leaving an apartment in Spanish Town. The victim then drove downtown to get away, BRPD added.
