The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously preserved access to a medication that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year, in the court’s first abortion decision since conservative justices overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago. The justices ruled that abortion opponents lacked the legal right to sue over the federal Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the medication, mifepristone, and the FDA's subsequent actions to ease access to it. The case had threatened to restrict access to mifepristone across the country, including in states where abortion remains legal ..read more

The metro and coastal communities of North Miami and Broward County were rocked by rounds of unforgiving tropical downpours on Wednesday which quickly transformed streets into rivers, stranding motorists and causing a cascade of delays and closures along southeast Florida’s bustling I-95 corridor. By rush hour on Wednesday, the flash flooding had spiraled into an especially dangerous, life-threatening situation, prompting the National Weather Service in Miami to issue a flash flood emergency – a dire and exceedingly rare flood alert sent out only for the most severe threats to life or property ..read more

The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits jumped to the highest level in 10 months last week, another possible sign that the labor market is loosening under the weight of high interest rates. Unemployment benefit applications for the week ending June 8 rose by 13,000 to 242,000, up from 229,000 the week before, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That's significantly more than the 225,000 new claims analysts were expecting and the most since August of 2023. The four-week average of claims, which softens some of the week-to-week volatility, rose to 227,000 an increase of 4,750 fro ..read more

Leaders of the Group of Seven rich democracies are meeting in a faux medieval town constructed as a luxury resort on the heel of Italy’s boot. Borgo Egnazia, nestled amid olive groves and prickly pear cacti in the southern Puglia region, has reportedly hosted Madonna and the Beckhams. Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got married there. On Thursday, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni waited near the arched entrance and in front of one of Puglia's famed olive trees to greet the other G7 leaders. The summit venues have been located far from population centers since police clashed with anti-globaliz ..read more

Wholesale price increases fell in May, the latest sign that inflation pressures in the United States may be easing as the Federal Reserve considers a timetable for cutting interest rates. The Labor Department reported Thursday that its producer price index — which tracks inflation before it reaches consumers — declined 0.2% from April to May after rising 0.5% the month before. Measured from a year earlier, wholesale prices were up 2.2% in May. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core producer prices were unchanged from April and up 2.3% from May 2023. The producer price index ..read more

A suspected attack Thursday by Yemen's Houthi rebels saw missiles strike a ship in the Gulf of Aden, authorities said, setting the vessel ablaze, in what would be the latest such assault in their campaign over the Israel-Hamas war. The attack happened in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen, the British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said. It said the vessel caught fire in the attack. The private security firm Ambrey said a merchant vessel made a radio distress call saying it had been struck by a missile. The ship “was en route from Malaysia to Venice, Italy,” Ambrey said. The left-of-center politician aiming to become Britain’s prime minister in three weeks’ time said Thursday he will lead a government that’s both “pro-business and pro-worker” and restore stability after years of economic and political turmoil. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer said that if he’s elected on July 4, he will end the “desperate era of gestures and gimmicks” of the Conservative Party’s turbulent tenure. Launching Labour’s election manifesto in the northwest England city of Manchester, Starmer said a Labour government would “stop the chaos, turn the page and start to rebuild our count ..read more

The UK Green Party struggles to be heard in an election where climate change is on the back burner
WPLG Local 10
by Jill Lawless, Associated Press

There’s lots of talk of change in Britain’s election campaign, but little talk about climate change. The U.K.’s July 4 vote to choose a new government comes after one of the wettest and warmest winters on record, part of trends that scientists attribute to global warming. But discussion of climate and the environment has taken a back seat to Britain’s sluggish economy, high cost of living and creaking health care system — and whether, as polls suggest, the governing Conservatives’ time is up after 14 years in power. That frustrates the Green Party, which is battling a political system that mak ..read more

After rare flash flood emergency, South Florida prepares for more heavy rainfall in coming days
WPLG Local 10
by Curt Anderson, Associated Press

A tropical disturbance has brought a rare flash flood emergency to much of southern Florida as residents prepared to weather more heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday. Wednesday's downpours and subsequent flooding blocked roads, floated vehicles and delayed the Florida Panthers on their way to Stanley Cup games in Canada against the Edmonton Oilers. The disorganized storm system was pushing across Florida from the Gulf of Mexico at roughly the same time as the early June start of hurricane season, which this year is forecast to be among the most active in recent memory amid concerns that clim ..read more
