Creating Extraordinary out of the Ordinary: Woodward Architects Transform a 1970’s Sydney Beach House.

Woodward Architects have transformed a mundane 1970s beach house into an extraordinary family home. Located in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the architects sought to enhance the house’s connection to the outdoors and celebrate the building’s existing DNA wherever possible. Drawing inspiration from the elegant simplicity of Japanese design and echoing the ethos of wabi-sabi, this project finds beauty in imperfection, embracing the raw and unrefined with a quiet elegance. Rather than knock the whole thing down and start again, principal architect Matthew Woodward and his team looked to ..read more

All Eyes Up: An Apartment in Poznan by Paradowski Studio.

A high ceiling can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on which way you look at it. Just ask Zuza and Piotr Paradowski of Krakow-based design office Paradowski Studio, whose latest project, a 250-square-metre apartment in Poznan (a former Prussian medieval city situated on the banks of the Warta River), and more specifically, its five-metre ceiling, was a little bit of both. It was good, because it was, after all, a nice little hat-tip to the country’s postmodern past. It was bad because, let’s face it, what in the world do you do with a ceiling so high? The ..read more

Ross Gardam Takes Over a Brutalist Space to Present Latest Editions & Luminaires Collection.

Ross Gardam took over a brutalist space ‘under construction’ to present the studio’s latest editioned pieces. The elegant objects take centre stage against the distressed concrete architecture including the Ora Desk Lamp pictured above.   A new product for the studio, the Mass table is an assemblage of natural and industrial forms, including waste stone offcuts that ground the object in stasis. A quiet experiment for the studio, the object is intended to inform future production.   The Vestige Table Lamp glows against the fluted pattern of recycled concrete blocks.   Ross Gard ..read more

Civic yet Intimate: Casa Los Tigres in Mexico by César Béjar Studio.

Casa Los Tigres is a home with many facades. To the streets of Culiacán’s Nuevo Vallarta, it presents itself as a closed-off private residence; solid walls with minimal punctures impose a high level of privacy from the small beachside town. Beyond, it uses order and vertical elements to set up a contemporary home with carefully curated moments towards the traditional Mexican central courtyard. In collaboration with Fernando Sánchez Zepeda, Mexican architect César Béjar configured this 465 square meter beachside home into two blocks, separated by a large central courtyard. It is ..read more

Cheerful and Generous: Moving House in Singapore by Spark Architects.

Blink and we may have found ourselves flipping through a dreamy interior catalogue of the 60s with Spark Architects’ Moving House. A three-bedroom 132-square-metre renovation set within Singapore’s Brutalist Sherwood Towers, Moving House exudes the colourful preferences and personality of the client. This project rejects tightly planned spaces and partition overload often found in high-density apartments while being thoughtful with colour and overall planning. The original footprint was a typical collection of enclosed rooms connected by a corridor. The lack of partitions for natur ..read more

Remember the 1992 Clint Eastwood movie Unforgiven? It was shot on a 480-acre ranch in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just outside the Canadian town of Calgary. But as one particular property in California proves, it doesn’t take hiking all the way up to Canada (or anywhere else) to experience Eastwood’s wild wild west. Bust’n B Ranch, located about ten minutes from Pioneertown, a historic Hollywood western set town in California founded in 1946 by legendary Western actors such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, is where spectacular landscapes meet spectacular sunsets, and nature ..read more

It’s safe to say that everyone is very familiar with IKEA’s super clever business model of aspirational home displays — enticing anyone who walks past into popping a spare RÄFFELBJÖRK in the trolley just because it looks so nice in its entirely faux living room. Well, the Swedes have done it again, and this time, it’s a serious step up from IKEA. For USM’s private showroom in Shanghai, Stockholm-based Halleroed took 130 square metres of showroom and made a real home, creating a space for private clients to view USM’s Modular Furniture. The result is a considered and clean apartment ..read more
