Inflation and Corporate Profit
Reason For The Unreasonable

There was a moment during the pandemic in 2021 where many workers felt that for the first time in decades the pendulum had swung in their favor. By this I mean that because of government subsidy in unemployment insurance, workers begun to feel as though they had options in terms of who they wanted to work for, and why. A cushion in income meant that workers, particularly blue collar workers, didn’t have to sell their labor to the first bidder. The result of which, in brief, is that workers suddenly had the choice as to whether they wanted to work for the first salary offered- or wait for anoth ..read more

Pandemic Economics – Free Market or Government Overreach?

We find ourselves in interesting times. The reason I’m writing this is that I think that the vaccination debate has inadverdently joined itself with the general debate for workers in the U.S. The sentiment is the same among both groups, but the impetus is very different. Let me explain. The general movement to pressure working conditions and wages has clearly fomented a public audience. In this last year, the U.S. has had a sort of proto-general strike, detailed here. Most notably this excerpt: Last Friday’s jobs report showed the number of job openings at a record high. The share of people wo ..read more

Inflation, and How Did We Get Here?

In 2021, inflation has risen 5.4% across all indexed goods according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Between August and September, food and shelter accounted for over half of the month-to-month increase. Here is what is interesting: From a month to month perspective, we have already passed the peak inflation rate. Let’s look at 12 month trailing:Despite the fact that inflation may have plateaued coming into Q4 2021, we should explore what caused the surge of inflation in the first place. You’re reading that right. Wages are downwardly suppressed while inflation is rising. This is a particul ..read more

Labor Market Back to Normal?

The Department Of Labor released its unemployment data last Thursday with the following status: “In the week ending August 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 348,000, a decrease of 29,000 from the previous week’s revised level. This is the lowest level for initial claims since March 14, 2020 when it was 256,000.“ This means that new applicants for unemployment are at their lowest levels since March 2020. A certain amount of unemployment claims are healthy in an expanding economy – businesses pivot or downsize in order to temporarily invest elsewhere. I’m not sure ..read more

Our Ancestors Might Ask: What Was the Point?

This topic came about after I recently read an older Onion article, entitled “Last Male Heir to Bloodline Watches Movie Alone On Laptop”. This hilariously absurd article by the champions of facety, details an evening in for an average single male who doesn’t seem to have a particularly strong drive to meet a female and procreate. Please read the article. If you can’t be bothered, it basically chronicles the vast violence and uncertainty which our ancestors faced, and without triumph over those struggles we wouldn’t even be here. Fighting off predators; sailing across the ocean; making a trek a ..read more

Graph of the Day – Average Rent cost

The average rent for a one bedroom apartment in the U.S. in 2020 was $1098 a month. While there has been a large trend of Californians moving to Texas due to rent, there still exists a large affordability crisis. Unlike Europe, the U.S. does not have a land shortage. The exponential rent and land cost increases are due to demand on a prolific scale. The center of the country is essentially hollowed out on this graph, with the coasts increasing in rent costs. The propensity for people to move to the coast has yielded an untenable situation for all but the highest paid professionals, and there ..read more

The Age of the U.S.

Here is a chart depicting the median age of the citizen of each respective state: We shouldn’t be surprised that Florida and Arizona have a darker blend. Maine and West Virginia are surprising in that we don’t consider them retirement destinations. What this chart should do, is inform state representatives of their retirement obligations, as well as how their workforce is aging. Even if your state is a retirement destination, you would still assume that workers should counter-balance the aging population. How does your state fare ..read more

How Do We Benefit From Infrastructure Spending?
Reason For The Unreasonable

This question should be asked in a way that doesn’t diminish the political leanings and aspirations of the average American. I should ask more precisely, “does infrastructure spending benefit everyone, some more than others, or is vastly overstated in terms of its value? This is an important question within contemporary hyper-partisan politics where seemingly every facet of life has become a bifurgation of political thought. In other words, there remains little in the way of even mundane daily action which isn’t diverted into political context, and infrastructure is no exception. Suppose for a ..read more
