Silver Haze – Film Review
by Hugh Maguire
Director – Sacha Polak
Writer – Sacha Polak
Stars – Vicky Knight, Esme Creed-Miles, Charlotte Knight
In key moments of British theatre history, plays such as John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger (1956) and Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming 1964) set new bars in stage realism, both in dialogue and acting style. Such ‘realism’ or what passes for realism is of course the preserve of any number of film directors from later generations, many of them household names, with Mike Leigh, Terence Davies and Ken Loach being to the fore. Something like ..read more

Mother’s Instinct – Film Review
by David Turpin
Director – Benoît Delhomme
Writers – Barbara Abel, Sarah Conradt
Stars – Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Josh Charles
It’s the early 1960s in an affluent American suburb. Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Celine (Anne Hathaway) are neighbours. Each is mother to an apple-cheeked little boy, and wife to a sketchily characterised husband. They have a sisterly bond that presumably sustains them through the doldrums and travails of suburban life. Fate, however, intervenes in the form of a terrible accident involving a hand-made bir ..read more

Motherkraft – Project Arts Centre – ReviewTheatre / 20-23 March 2024
There are 3 members of the cast already on stage as the production begins. They are seated behind desks and operating a variety of computers and other electronic gadgets. As the piece begins, they are joined by the main performer for the evening, Regan O’Brien.
The piece is essentially a collection of songs with movement and spoken word between them. The production touches on the science fiction genre and feels quite otherworldly.
The songs are vocal pieces, along with some live guitar and recorded sound. T ..read more

Elbow – Audio Vertigo – Album Review
by Killian Laher
After the contemplative Flying Dream 1, Elbow return a couple of years later with their tenth album. This album is an altogether different beast from its predecessor. It opens with Things I’ve Been Telling Myself For Years, which despite a wordy title is a great big singalong song, with Guy Garvey’s yearning vocals joined by a cast of thousands in studio to drive home the chorus. There’s a ‘busyness’ to a lot of the songs here. They cram loads of ideas into Lovers’ Leap, Talk Talk synths, brass, a catchy melody and G ..read more
