We are always looking for new yarn to stock, however it is always good to make something out of a potential new line of Yarn to try it out first. The yarn I'm trialling is from D.M.C and is called Nova Vita 12 recycled cotton, it is a rope style yarn and is 250g per ball, The ball band states it can be used for knitting, crochet and macrame, for home furnishings, bags, rugs etc. Each 4mm thick strand is made from two woven tubes, a smaller inner tub and a wider outer tube, that give this yarn a superior strength. This ensures your craft projects last longer, as its cotton it has a better heat ..read more

I started knitting at the age of fourteen in the early eighties, I was self taught by getting a book from the library, (before the World Wide Web) back then Mohair yarn/wool was in fashion. Unfortunately I can't remember the book, but I remember learning how to cast on using the thumb method and how to knit the following stitches. In my opinion these stitches are the building blocks of knitting, and by mastering these you can make many garments including blankets, scarfs ,sweaters, cardigans, toys etc. 1. Knit Stitch 2. Purl stitch 3. Rib Stitch 4. Garter stitch 5. Stocking Stitch By learning ..read more

Fabric GSM what is it and what does it mean?
Miss Lavenders

When purchasing fabric you may come across the phrase “GSM of the fabric”. GSM means Grams per Square Meter. There are many types of fabric from natural fibre fabrics to synthetic fibres and a mix of both, there's at least 28 types of fabric. All of which have different types of GSM as you can imagine Leather has a higher GSM than Chiffon and so on. GSM does not mean the quality of the fabric its just the weight. This system is also used on paper products, so the next time your buying paper for your printer from the local store on the side of the packet it usually has the GSM, this like fabric ..read more
