Steve Carney: Modest fishing success on the South Dakota border, but best is yet to come

My first fishing trip to the Big Stone-Traverse South Dakota border-waters system turned out rather lukewarm, as anticipated. It’s amazing how predictable this system can be when everything is predicated on spring water temperatures. Spring, more than any other time of year, provides some quality fishing right off the banks. These opportunities exist along roadsides, ditches, feeder creeks, docks, and bridges. Outdoornews » Ice Fishing
by Matt Jaworowski

It has been nearly two years since the Illinois DNR announced its creative endeavor to fight back against invasive carp: giving it a new name and encouraging people to eat the fish. DNR renamed invasive carp as copi – short for copious. The agency teamed up with chefs and food retailers who are on board with the plan and even offered incentives funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Yet it’s still almost impossible to find on store shelves. Why? The rebranding effort hasn’t failed, but the full scope of the project hasn’t fully materialized. The pos ..read more

Another Illinois rookie professional angler is turning heads as the tournament season launches. This time it’s at the Major League Fishing Stage 3 event at Tennessee’s Dale Hollow Lake. Drew Gill, of Mount Carmel, who went to high school at Abeka Academy before fishing for the Wabash Valley Community College team, caught 26 scorable bass weighing 77 pounds, 15 ounces on Day 1. That put him 16 pounds ahead of Jeff Sprague at the top of Group A in the tournament, which uses a “catch-weigh-immediate release” model. If you’re a New York angler and you don’t know anything about cisco, you aren’t alone. In some states, cisco, which are classified as salmonids, are an important game fish. But they aren’t a major target for most anglers in New York, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. They are, however, an important forage fish for other sport fish that New York anglers do pursue, and that’s why DEC plans to reestablish the species into the Finger Lakes, specifically Keuka Lake. Fishing the large waterway of Pennsylvania’s Big Pine Creek is tough chore right now, but the trout are there

This past Sunday morning I headed to camp in Tioga County to visit one of my favorite Pennsylvania trout streams, the Big Pine Creek.  Through the many years, I’ve cast nymphs, dry and wet flies and occasional plugs. The majority of my angling here has taken place from the upper section in Potter County near the town of Galeton, downstream through the magnificent Pennsylvania Grand Canyon section, and ending about a mile or so below the little hamlet of Blackwell.  The post Fishing the large waterway of Pennsylvania’s Big Pine Creek is tough chore right now, but the trout are th ..read more
