Within hours of the beginning of the Civil War, the women of the North began to come together to provide support for the thousands of men who eagerly volunteered to put down the Southern rebellion. In Madison, Wisconsin, Emily Quiner and her sisters began raising money and sewing a regimental flag for the brave boys of Wisconsin. On Saturday, April 20th, Emily and her sister Maria raised $84.00 to support the war effort. As the men of Fort Sumter prepared to board the Baltic on April 14, 1861, one woman joined the Union’s evacuation from Charleston. Matilda Anne (Annie) Davis, the sister of Lieutenant Jefferson C. Davis, was a student at Madame Bounetheau’s Charleston Ladies Seminary. Her classmates included the daughters of prominent Charleston families. In early March, her classmates sent bouquets of flowers to welcome General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard to the command of Confederate forces in Charleston. Like many of you, I have found my life altered by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thankfully no one in my family has been inflicted with the virus, however, the closing of libraries and archives and restrictions on travel have limited my research. As libraries have slowly begun to reopen I have been able to return to research on women of the Civil War.
