How to excel in your rotating internship
VetMed Survival Guide

Transitioning into having DVM after your name is hard. You were "just" a student the other day and now you're expected to be in charge! If you followed my advice, you should have been practicing how to be a doctor all of your last year of vet school. After all, that's the time to act like it, since you have a lot of backup and support. Now you're a newly minted veterinarian, and it's a scary, uncertain time.  You're worried about the patients, the pressure, and the feeling of the unknown. Don't get me wrong, you WILL make mistakes. Everyone does, no matter what they say or how they act ..read more

Personal Capital – Why you must use it to track your finances
VetMed Survival Guide
by Pedro

I've been using Personal Capital for 2+ years now. After I came across it, it took me about 6 months to decide to actually use it.  I was unsure about adding all my accounts (think credit cards, loans, bank accounts, retirements accounts, etc) to a platform that will then display them for you. You'll see how every account is doing in one place.  I had to read more about what "read only connection" meant, and then be ok with that. Not really sure why I was so skeptical, but I was. That changed when I finally started using it.  "Read only connection" means that you add your accou ..read more

Do you know what your net worth is?
VetMed Survival Guide

Your current net worth is probably negative For many of you in the veterinary field, your net worth is deep in the red.  With the magnitude of student debt any veterinary graduate faces, you are likely to have a negative net worth for a few years regardless of your income.  Let's start by calculating it: Net worth = Assets - Debts. Assets include anything with cash value (bank accounts, property, investments), while liabilities include any types of loans (students, car, credit card, etc).  Net Worth = Assets - Debts. It has nothing to do with how much money you make! The ..read more

What to do with your veterinary student loans during COVID
VetMed Survival Guide

The Cares act COVID led to a federal state of emergency, and the CARES Act passed in the Senate. So what does this mean for your student loans? The CARES Act basically says that not only there is no accrued interest on your loans, but also that no payments are due until September 30th.  Keep in mind this only applies to federal loans, NOT private loans. If you have private loans and/or refinanced, you're still on the hook for payments. Under the CARES Act, payments on federal loans are NOT due until Sept 30th. Plus, interest does not accrue! You're getting a 0% interest rate Thi ..read more

How to interpret PCR test results and how it relates to COVID-19
VetMed Survival Guide

As a small animal internist, it is not uncommon for me to come across diagnostic test results that were misinterpreted or overlooked by other veterinary professionals. This includes students, interns, residents and even veterinarians that have been in practice for many years. Everyone makes mistakes, and that won't ever change. If anyone reading this disagrees on the above, there really are only two possibilities: 1. You have no clue you made a mistake because no one ever pointed it out (most common), or 2. You think you know everything and therefore there's no way you'd ever make a mistak ..read more

Financial advisor compensation – how do they get paid?
VetMed Survival Guide
by Pedro

Can you quickly answer how your financial advisor gets paid? If you're like the vast majority of people, the answer is no. Many of us think that we're actually not paying anything substantial, and this is how things work - after all, they reached out to us during vet school / internship / residency / etc and said they'd work with you for free! They even set you up with some insurance and took care of your investing accounts.  Sweet deal! You didn't pay anything, and you're now set with a solid financial plan. Chances are you even got free food out the whole thing.  Does this sound too good t ..read more

Match day is right around the corner (tomorrow, 2/10/2020), and if you've applied, your stress levels are sky high! You're about to find out where you're going to spend the next year (or three for residencies). On the other hand, what if you don't Match? What will you do? Stress levels are likely even higher for those of you that didn't get contacted by programs for interviews. You submitted your application and heard nothing but crickets. Or you were the one asking about interviews with programs you're interested in, regardless of if you ended up getting them interviews or not.  Meanwhile ..read more

To Rank or not to Rank
VetMed Survival Guide
by Pedro

Should I rank internship/residency program X or Y? This must be one of the most common questions we get here at VSG. Realistically, only you have all the details to make this decision. Everyone's circumstances will be slightly different,  but we can hopefully help tip the balance one way or the other.  It's "easy" to decide the ranking of most programs. Just rank them in your order of preference. In other works, rank your top choice #1, second choice #2 and so on. Rank programs in your order of preference. There is no benefit to try and "play the game" The tricky part arises arises f ..read more
