A Love Letter to Edmonton Trees

It’s been seven long pandemic months since I last posted in this digital space and to be quite honest, I wasn’t sure if I would return to it at all. But, as it always seems to be for me, the creative pull is strong and I’ve always enjoyed blogging as a outlet. With the urge to share and create, but being wholly unsure of what exactly to write, I turned to what I always turn to in uncertainty - trees. Over the past several months, whether my mental health was wavering or just downright crummy, I would go outdoors and walk in the direction of a tree. I craved the curiosity, the stillness, the co ..read more

It’s been two years (and one global pandemic) since I first started sharing my favourite local Edmonton companies. Over the past year, there has been a definite shift in the conversation around supporting local and the importance of placing a deliberate focus on how you choose to spend your money. The positive impacts of supporting independent businesses are substantial. By shopping local, you are fostering character and growth within your own community, reducing your environmental impact and carbon footprint, and helping to grow job availability. Additionally, local retailers return more mone ..read more

Preservation is Key Very simply put, Wagner Natural Area exemplifies the importance of preserving and protecting the natural communities around us. An Alberta Park located 20 km outside of the city, Wagner’s astounding biodiversity is a fantastic representation of some of the most enchanting ecosystems found in the province. I’d heard about the beauty of this area from its many advocates, but only recently visited for the first time last fall and have since been back after a few snowfalls. As you walk the meandering trail, you’ll be immersed in the changing landscapes and the many natural wond ..read more

Prairie Skies

I wasn’t born in Alberta, but I have lived here for many years and am still transfixed by it’s landscapes. Last summer, a friend and I travelled outside of the city with the intention of finding some open spaces and big skies. Curiosity led us to the top of a grassy hill and we discovered some train tracks that were otherwise hidden from view. Within moments, a train could be heard in the distance and we watched as it effortlessly sailed across the expansive fields. It made me reflect upon my time in Alberta and a particular sentence seemed to keep replaying in my mind: “I was not born to your ..read more

Local eateries, cafes, and shops are full of creativity and character and they help to shape their communities in a positive way. Below are four local companies that I’ve recently been introduced to! It’s also worth noting that these businesses are created and run by some very inspirational women. Below are three of my favourite local companies that I’ve recently been introduced to! Ohana Donuterie Address: 10347 80 Avenue Neighbourhood: Strathcona Junction I’ve heard from many that the donuts at Ohana Donuterie are fantastic, but here’s the only thing that these celiac ears really retained: the Ohana Bites are gluten-free. I promptly placed an order the day after receiving this cr ..read more

One of my most common and vivid daydreams has been to grow a thriving and happy front yard vegetable garden! This season, I’ve made plans to construct a raised garden bed to hopefully expand upon my harvesting ambitions. Throughout the process, I intend to document my attempt to transition my whimsical daydreams into a front yard reality, with the ultimate goal of sharing veggies with the community! Radishes As a true gardening novice, I would very much recommend radishes as an easy and rewarding starter veggie. They certainly gave me a boost of confidence once those gorgeous red tops began fo ..read more

I adore Edmonton - the city seems to have an abundance of curious beauty around every corner and hidden in every neighbourhood. Below are three of my favourite spaces to visit! Borden Park Pavilion Address: 7507 Borden Park Road Neighbourhood: Virginia Park Borden Park is a beautiful, whimsical, and interactive community park space. I could really go on and on about its perfection. Near the center of the park, you’ll find the Borden Park Pavilion, which is a true bliss. On the exterior, long triangular mirrors reflect the surrounding landscape and you can delight in how the images transform as ..read more
