How To Avoid Stress and Mental Illness in Public Relations
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog

Is it even possible to avoid stress in public relations? This post will provide several powerful mindsets and techniques to help communicators- and PR professionals avoid stress and mental illness. According to a recent study, 41% of all sick leaves in the Swedish communications industry are mental illnesses. During my 17 years in the PR industry, I know of countless former industry colleagues who suffered periods of stress-related mental health problems. And I’m no exception; in 2016 (the same year I was awarded Cision Scandinavia’s PR Influencer of the Year Award), I had to turn the volume d ..read more

Call-To-Action—Save the PR Industry
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog

You and I must save the PR industry. PR is in constant flux, and our industry must evolve. But we’ve already messed up. Big time. After the dot-com bubble in 2000-2001, the Internet slowed down. Social media began to emerge with behemoths like Facebook founded in 2004 and Twitter in 2006. Their social engineering was geared towards connecting people rather than turning them into online buying machines. At first. For a good number of years, the monetisation of the Internet progressed slowly. We got to experience the Hippie Web (2005-2015) revolving around earned an ..read more

How will the Silent Switch impact your content? In this article, you’ll get a deep understanding of how social media algorithms silently have been de-democratised and transformed into a series of global Pavlovian experiments. As a PR adviser since 2005 and a digital strategist since 2007, I’ve seen the Silent Switch slowly manifest right before our eyes—one seamless iteration after another. At this very moment, we got a bad situation on our hands. And as a fellow PR professional, you should be fully aware of what has happened—and what’s still happening. Let’s dive right in: Table of Contents Y ..read more

The Problem-Agitate-Solve (PAS) Formula for PR Writers
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog
by Jerry Silfwer

PAS in PR writing is a double-edged sword. We all hate reading unnecessary text to get to whatever solution we’re looking for. “Get to the point already,” we think to ourselves. Wading waist-deep through anecdotes, analogies, context, and disclaimers is tiring. Getting to the point sometimes seems to be a lost art. It’s the PAS-ification of content marketing, it seems. PAS is a widely popular acronym for writing content — Pain-Agitate-Solve. We make a point of delaying the solution to ensure reader engagement. According to both theory and online analytics, this seems to be the right path to ta ..read more

Influencer Inflation—A Sad Cocktail of Unrequited Friendship
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog

I have this hypothesis about influencer inflation. In this post, I’ll discuss why regular people in your feeds are suddenly starting to talk and act like influencers — despite having no real audiences to address. I’m a seasoned digital PR expert professionally, but I’m also a regular social media user. I follow friends, family, and acquaintances on my social media accounts. And something seems to be shifting. The behaviour where non-influencers mimic influencer mannerisms are fascinating — and somewhat sad. I call this phenomenon “Influencer Inflation”. Let’s dive right into it: Table of Conte ..read more

A New Website for Spin Factory
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog

I built a new website for Spin Factory, my freelance agency. As a freelance consultant with a blog, it’s easy to neglect the “business website.” I keep them separated to rank in English for Doctor Spin and Swedish for Spin Factory. One could argue that I don’t need a secondary WordPress site, but I have the domain for my business email, and some clients prefer Swedish. So, building a new website for Spin Factory became a mini-project. Spin Factory’s new website. I wanted Spin Factory to share the visual look-and-feel with Doctor Spin. My freelance business only takes up 50% of my time (the oth ..read more

Here’s my list of inspiring photographers on Instagram. Given my recent interest in photography in general — and nature photography in particular, you’ll find that most of these accounts are focused on nature and the outdoor lifestyle. That said, I do enjoy a few street- and lifestyle photographers as well. What they all have in common, however, is that they’re all master editors! My 2021 Annual Review
Doctor Spin | The Digital Strategy & Public Relations Blog

Time for my 2021 annual review. In this post, I’ll do my best to answer these three questions:1 What went well this year? What didn’t go so well this year? What am I working toward? Here we go: What Went Well This Year? Simplicity. For 2021, I wanted to simplify my life. I got rid of lots of stuff. I also organised our entire home, spending quite a lot of money on boxes, drawers, labels, appliances, less software, routines etc. This was easy to do, but the positive effects have been monumental. Seven years without alcohol. Yet another year without alcohol. And still no problems whatsoever. In ..read more
