The Plant Utopia

If you are a fan of Alocasias like I am, you will appreciate that there is a new way to get the tubers to grow rather than using leca or sphagnum moss. I recently discovered this substrate called Fluval Stratum. I put a couple of tubers from my Alocasia Cuprea Red Secret in a couple of plastic cups with fluval stratum as the growing medium and the tubers began growing roots within a couple of days. It took about a couple of weeks for the tubers to grow leaves. You will want to keep the Fluval medium moist and not let it dry out or the roots will dry out. A couple of roots of one of my tubers d ..read more

As soon as I saw this plant, I had to have it, the leaves are amazing with unique colors. Technically, this plant was called Dioscorea Discolor but now the proper botanical name for it is D. Dodecaneura. I just call it the variegated yam because that is easier. I was fortunate enough to get this plant from Almost Eden Plants back in May of 2021 because I signed up to be notified by email when it came back in stock. You can still sign up for the e ..read more

Please note: This post contains affiliate links. I may earn a commission on some items linked on this page. I really wanted to believe that all plants could thrive in LECA. I have heard that it cuts down on pests and some plants grow really big in leca for some people. So I decided to would try a few plants in it and see how it goes. Here are my fails in the LECA experiment. Monstera Adansonii Wide Form My Monstera Adansonii wide form wasn’t doing so well in it’s original soil, so I decided to transition it to LECA. I didn’t put it in water first, instead I just plopped it right into leca. Als ..read more

Growing plants in Soil and Leca at The Same Time, Same Pot – an experiment
The Plant Utopia

Why? Anthurium Dressler x Radicans was not doing well in plain leca and I thought it was dead. It was growing in plain soil when I first got it. Plain soil did not make it happy so I then tried plain leca. It never seemed to grow more than 2 leaves at a time. I was growing it in the grow tent so light or humidity wasn’t the problem. So I decided to try something different with an experiment. I saw another grower on Youtube who was growing spider plants in soil and also soil/leca combo. I decided to give it a try. The plant looked pretty dead so what did I have to lose? I wish I could find the ..read more

Please note: This post contains affiliate links. I may earn a commission on some items linked on this page. In order for your plants to grow consistently, you will need to fertilize them regularly while they are actively growing. Here I will show you how to fertilize your plants for major growth. There are a lot of fertilizers to chose from so it can be hard to decide which one will be the best for your plants. My chosen fertilizers at this time are Liquid dirt and General Hydroponics fertilizers. I alternate them and then on the 3rd week I just use plain water. Then every once in a while I wi ..read more

Please note: This post contains affiliate links. I may earn a commission on some items linked on this page. Why am I propagating my plants? Why not? The more plants the better, I am always going for that jungle jumanji vibe in my environment even though my housemates tend to think I am over the top with it. Rather than continually keep buying plants for the most part, I have decided to start propagating some of my favorite plants. I have noticed that some are harder to propagate than others so I had to do things differently than I usually do. Most of the time, once I clip off a piece of a plan ..read more

How to set up an IKEA greenhouse cabinet
The Plant Utopia

Back in 2020, I started seeing posts about people turning IKEA glass cabinets into greenhouses. People were putting beautiful aroids, hoyas and other plants in these “greenhouses”. I decided that I had to get in on this trend because why not and it looked fun. Finding an IKEA Milsbo cabinet during a pandemic I started the search to create an IKEA greenhouse cabinet by looking for the Milsbo cabinet. I needed a cabinet that was big so I could put aroids in it. Of course there were none in stock back then and there still are none in stock in my local IKEA to this day. Luckily, I kept looking on ..read more
