It was getting hot in Florida.  Dan and I were fully Covid vaccinated.  It was time to hitch up our little home on wheels and start the trek back to New Hampshire.   And why not take our time…lovely weather and different sites to see along the way.  Besides, NH is not really WARM until about Memorial Day, so that was our goal.  Leave FL the beginning of May and arrive in Epsom in time for Memorial Day weekend with family and friends at Twin Barns Brewing. First Stop:  Brunswick Georgia and St. Simons Island.  The lead photo was of Dan relaxing at our ..read more

Who can resist this view??? The photo above is of Philpott Lake in Virginia, our first experience camping with the Army COE.  When we bought our travel trailer, the gentleman from whom we purchased it suggested that we check out Army Corps of Engineers Campgrounds.  We had never heard of them. But, now they are our preferred campground as we travel around the country exploring in the camper. The Corps of Engineers, or COE for short, are in charge of various dam projects that have been undertaken in the US. mainly for flood control.  They are everywhere, with over 400 lake/ri ..read more

Into the Appalachians, Part 1 View from the Blue Ridge Parkway   We live in NH most of each year, not far from the White Mountains of NH and the Green Mountains of VT.  Technically, these are part of the Appalachian range.  And, Mount Washington here in NH is over 6000 feet, so that’s pretty high.  But as much time as we have spent in the NE mountain chains, there is nothing to compare to the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia. Dan and I left NH just at the beginning of foliage season, hoping to catch it for a few weeks on our journey south as we made a delib ..read more

Welcome to the first installment of Dan and Nan’s Excellent Adventure. I know that many of my online friends have been wondering what I’ve been up to.  I kind of fell off the face of the blogging world for a while.  Part of that was motivation; part was that we were just too busy with life in general, particularly in getting ready for our  BIG ADVENTURE. I’ve referred a couple of times in the past to our intention to embark on a 9-10 month cross country RV trip.  Well, Covid-be-damned, we are doing it!  We took a couple of short trips this summer in the trailer (Be ..read more

No Covid in Vermont… Or at least very little.  With daily cases for the whole state in the single digits, Vermont has done an admirable job of keeping that beast at bay.  Most of the cases that do arise are concentrated in cities like Burlington, which one should expect where there are larger populations and more interactions with others on a daily basis. But, part of this is also due to the vigilance of the state government, public health officials, and the residents of the Green Mountain State.  From the beginning of the pandemic Vermont has had strict regulations for ..read more

Cadillac Mountain from Schoodic Peninsula, Acadia National Park, Maine.  God’s country. All of the US is NOT a Covid 19 hotspot. The people in the northeast USA, folks who actually listened to the doctors and followed the science, have beat back this virus and the incidence of infection is now quite low.  For now. This includes New York (once the epicenter), New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire (where our home is) and the beautiful state of Maine.  But, to prevent us from also becoming a covid s**t storm like Florida, Texas, Arizo ..read more

Economic and Emotional Consequences of Covid 19 It’s no secret that, in addition to the devastating toll in lives and health that the coronavirus pandemic has wreaked, there has been a high cost in terms of both our personal and collective economies.  Folks are out of work (including 2 of our own children) and many businesses were forced to close.  Some temporarily, some to never reopen again – which is the case for my daughter’s employer.  Son is waiting to be called back, but is unsure if that will ever happen and if he will be forced to search out other employment in this c ..read more

How are YOU doing with our new normal? If you are anything like me, you have good days and you have not-so-good days.  Being retired folk creates advantages and disadvantages as we deal with the Covid 19 pandemic.  First of all, it is easy to stay home.  We get groceries delivered and don’t have to worry about jobs or children’s schooling.  HOWEVER (and this is a biggie) we are pushing into the “senior” age group where we may be more susceptible to the symptoms of this coronavirus scourge. Playing it safe and doing some self-isolation seems smart to us, so that’s what we ..read more
