Canada: Poutine Pandemonium and Productivity Plunge

This week in Canada, it’s essentially National Poutine Week. What was once a mere “Day” has now blossomed into a full-fledged, week-long celebration, courtesy of overzealous restaurateurs and food enthusiasts. For an entire seven-day stretch, the entire country is twirling around the name that the majority of humanity refuses to pronounce. This is unprecedented for the Great White North – a land where the mere hint of political incorrectness is swiftly and severely punished, with consequences rivalling even the gravest sin of being indifferent to ice hockey. Not long ago, we were busily removi ..read more

Tesla Brain Drain is Not “To” OpenAI but rather “From” Musk

Elon Musk’s success and wealth alone do not make him the smartest person alive. While he skillfully reframes Tesla’s brain drain as a sign of the company’s superiority, he fails to grasp that increasing pay is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution: A new baseline is set, which is inevitably followed by escalation. Tesla and Musk’s other businesses would benefit more if he focused on improving employee engagement and morale, instead of prioritizing his personal ambitions and thinly veiled attempts to settle personal accounts – another telltale sign of poor leadership. Unlike in Sam Altman’s ..read more

UVALDE, BOEING, COJONES, and Shared Values

It took the US JD 604 days to acknowledge the glaring truth: the police response to the May 24, 2022, deadly Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting was “a failure that should not have happened.” Well, duh!.. One year, seven months, and 25 days, and nearly 600 pages later, the report highlights “a sweeping array of training, communication, leadership and technology problems that federal officials say contributed to the crisis.” I find this pathetic and laughable – if not for the deaths of 19 kids and 2 adults who fell victim to one wacko while 376 “law enforcement officers” couldn’t stop him ..read more

Every New Year celebration comes with the burden of annual performance reviews. More often than not, the review includes a dreaded 360-degree assessment. (This is part 2. You may want to read Part 1 – Beyond Criticism: Redefining 360-Degree Feedback for Success) If you are a people manager, here’s how the 360-degree review tool can bring a lot of value to your team. When Quality Meets Diversity, Diversity Wins

Apparently, not many people wanted to admit that When Lean and Safety Meet, Lean Wins — but today many businesses are more cautious with Lean, thanks to Boeing. And here’s more good news! Recently, we learned that When Diversity meets Quality, Diversity wins. This time, it did not cost 346 lives, thanks to Boeing again! But here’s what is still bothering me. Selecting the best in one subject based on their success in another will inevitably lower the overall quality of your team. It’s a math principle, kind of like a rule of nature, and we must follow those rules until we figure out how to cha ..read more

STEM Gender Gap: Shining Light on the Path to Fulfilling Future

Gallup is worried that females born between 1997 and 2011 are somewhat less interested in STEM sectors, compared with males. The rest of us should have more to worry about. According to a recent survey, the primary reason for ladies’ reduced interest in STEM is simple: more women than men “don’t enjoy STEM.” It is noteworthy that more men than women claim they “don’t know enough about STEM” or “can’t afford the education a STEM career requires,” suggesting no significant “barrier to entry” for ladies. Likewise, managers and tech employees in private discussions, admit that a gender gap ..read more

In a recent podcast, esteemed management consultant Pat Lencioni blasted the universally-known 360-Degree Assessment tool, tearing it apart virtually. Surprised initially, I soon realized that Pat’s negative experience was rooted in the worst version of the tool. My extensive use of 360-Degree Feedback over the years, with various clients, has proven exceptionally helpful. What would somebody say in defence of 360? asks Pat Lancioni in the podcast. Actually, I will. Here we go. What is “360-Degree Feedback” The 360-Degree Feedback, also known as ‘360-Degree Appraisal,’ ‘360-Degree Assessment ..read more
