We returned to Germany in October 2023 to run our “Volcanoes & Famous Fossil Sites” tour. This round-trip from Frankfurt takes in some world famous fossil specimens as well as volcanoes, meteor impact craters and ancient caves! For this trip, we were joined by guests from the UK and Ireland – unusually, six of our group already knew each other, as they were all members of the Irish Geological Association! It added a lovely dynamic to the group and before long, everyone was getting on like old friends! The blog below is a day-by-day diary of our trip illustrated with a selection of the best ..read more

Canary Islands 2024: Volcanic Island Hopping

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, our winter trip to the Canary Islands offers a rare (and very welcome!) glimpse of the sun and temperatures well into double-figures. And, of course, it offers the chance to view some of the spectacular geology that these islands have to offer. We were delighted to welcome along a group of guests from the UK, the USA and Ireland for our trip in February 2024. We also ran our modified itinerary for the first time, which gave us an extra day on La Palma, so that the extent and effect of the most recent volcanic eruption (in 2021) could be properly witn ..read more

November 2023 saw the eighth running of GeoWorld Travel’s “The Trilobite’s Sahara Kingdom” trip to Morocco. We were delighted to welcome guests from the UK, the USA, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands on our latest geological adventure. We followed the same route as in previous years, journeying from Marrakesh, across the High Atlas via Zagora to Merzouga, before returning via the Todra Gorge to Marrakesh to conclude the tour. Our first tour of 2024 took us back to a perennial favourite destination: Oman. With a group of guests from the UK, the USA, the Netherlands and France, we once again followed a route from Muscat travelling north to Sohar, then to Nizwa, on to Sharqiya Sands (Wahiba Sands), and then over to the coast at Sur before returning to Muscat. Along the way we visited examples of ophiolite, sheath folds, pillow basalts and snowball earth deposits, as well as the Moho and the stunning ‘mother of all outcrops’. The map below shows the route that we took. Once again, we were fortunate to have the logistic ..read more

In June 2023, we returned to Scotland to run our ever-popular ‘The Birth of Geology’ tour. Our group of 10 guests travelled from the USA and Canada to experience this wonderful tour around some of the most geologically important places in the United Kingdom, if not the world! GeoWorld Travel’s “Scotland: The Birth of Geology” route map Once again, we started our tour at perhaps the most important site of all – Hutton’s Unconformity at Siccar Point where, in 1788, its discovery laid the foundations for modern geology. From here, we then travelled north, stopping at various sites in the Cairngor ..read more

In April 2023, we set off on our England & Wales trip, covering the Jurassic Coast, visiting the type areas of the Carboniferous, Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician and Cambrian periods, and seeing outcrops from every period in the geologic timescale – just as the tour name suggests! We welcomed guests from the USA, Canada and Australia and, once again, the tour was co-lead by James Cresswell and Dr Martin Whiteley. The 2023 itinerary was slightly changed from previous iterations of the tour, with a brief foray to Dartmoor and into Cornwall. Many stops are detailed in our previous blog, which ..read more

In February 2023, we returned to the Canary Islands for some geological adventures in the winter sun (for those of us in the northern hemisphere!) Our group consisted of participants from the UK, the Netherlands and the USA, and James was assisted on this trip by Dr Martin Whiteley. Last time we were in the Canary Islands, in January 2022, the recent Cumbre Vieja eruption on La Palma had only just stopped. This time, we were able to take a guided tour into the ‘exclusion ‘restricted area’ to see some of the youngest lava on the islands close up, along with many other great geology sites on La ..read more

November 2022 saw the seventh running of our geological trip to Morocco. We followed a slightly altered itinerary this year, with a change to the order of the overnight stops, however it is broadly the same itinerary as previous trips (which can be read here: 2019 trip and 2021 trip), so this is just a brief summary with the best photos from the trip. GeoWorld Travel’s ‘Morocco: The Trilobite’s Sahara Kingdom’ route map Our group of intrepid travellers, from the UK and the USA, all gathered in Marrakech for the start of the trip. The subsequent 10 days saw us travel across the country, traver ..read more

In October 2022, we returned to Germany to explore the wonderful fossil and volcano sites that the country has to offer. In a slight change from the itinerary of our previous trip to Germany (the blog of which can be read here), we started and finished in Frankfurt. GeoWorld Travel’s “Germany: Volcanoes & Famous Fossil Sites” tour route map Our group assembled in Frankfurt at the start of the trip and from there we headed to the Messel Pit for the first stop of the tour.
