Greetings! It’s the start of a new season in the Celebrate A Sister series that highlights about 25 women on creative journeys and a few good men who reached out to sound their voice and share insight from 8 destinations so far. And yea, I might need to edit the name of the series soon – all in good time. I recently invited a few more bright lights to shine here with us on the blog and the first to set the pace this Gregorian calendar year is Skate Kween 246. When was your joy for skating stirred up?  My joy for skating was re-ignited about 2 years ago when my daughter travelled and she ..read more

Beautiful scenery and cooking steps to the sounds of birds (mostly.) Today’s cooking video includes two provisions picked from the street I’m on in Barbados – breadfruit and Jamaican ackee. If this is the first time you’re hearing about breadfruit, here is one of the posts on this versatile and delicious provision that’s found in abundance here. You can feed and fill a few people with one breadfruit. Thankfully it’s a good season so the trees are thriving right now. You probably heard it before but just in case you’re inspired to cook with ackee, the pods have to be open before even thinking a ..read more

Remember your worth | a loving reminder

Greetings on this beautifully rainy start to another gifted day. The breadfruit tree outside is loaded with fruits soon ready and some in the making. Birds have had their breakfast and are chirping from their shelters in the trees, the most bold of them perched on power lines sounding their voice as the tempo of raindrops slows down. The sun tries to introduce itself through the curtain of clouds as the day unfolds moment by moment. It’s on that note that (with love) I share this reminder: Know your worth. Do not forget it. (I have before and it is like letting a splintered part of a boat in d ..read more

High beautiful people, in today’s video we’re cooking with provisions and doing works in the garden. On the menu it’s Caribbean ‘ground food’ like eddoes and cassava alongside boiled green banana then later on, bakes fused with a breakfast biscuit, macaroni pie and for the harvest it’s all things moringa. Provisions from the earth like sweet potato and dasheen (plus the ones mentioned earlier) and ones from trees like breadfruit, plantain and green banana make up something we call ‘strong food‘ over here. They are versatile, wholesome, filling, nutritious, easy on the digestion, pair well with ..read more

Drinking or eating bitter herbs, fruits and roots are a longtime custom in The Caribbean. Whether it’s to get a good ‘clean out’ or detox, to prevent illness, to ward one off or to add as an accent to a plate. Bitter melon (like aloes, senna and cerasee bush) is one of many things that falls into that category. Different islands in the region have their take on the word whether it’s caraille, caraili, karaila, bitter cucumber and that applies to other names given to it in India, Phillipines, Japan, China (kerela, goya and more.) Caraille is an anti-inflammatory food, rich in antioxidants and e ..read more

What Bds.$25. Can Get You In A Bridgetown Market | Cooking Green Banana, Cassava, Okra and Plantain | Vlog

Today I went to a market in town and a farm shop in the middle of the island. Cheapside Market is at the edge of Bridgetown that’s closest to Kensington Oval. There’s an indoor market and a long stretch of street with vendors galore moreso on a Saturday morning but also on other days too. That’s actually a historic fact chronicled in song by Mighty Gabby in a song called “Bridgetown Market.” The farm shop is a quaint container business at the front of a beautiful farm run by a couple who with a small team quietly grows and sells produce but purposely doesn’t go hard when it comes to advertisin ..read more
