If April showers bring May flowers, we should have plenty of flowers, as New England has had rainfall totals five to ten inches higher than average for this time of year, causing the ground to be saturated and streams and ponds to be full or flooding. It’s garlic mustard season again! Garlic mustard is an invasive biennial plant that can be found in our backyards, along roadsides and in conservation areas. We hope everyone is ready to get out there and start pulling this invasive weed. Last year, a total of 506 paper bags of garlic mustard were collected from Lincoln residents! Let’s continue these extraordinary efforts at managing this invasive plant by pulling on your own properties and roadsides. Spring will officially arrive on March 19, the vernal equinox, but we have been hearing and seeing signs of the new season for weeks. Maybe the woodchuck was right on Groundhog Day, predicting an early spring.
