Total Eclipse from the summit of Saddleback Maine pc: Future MaineSkiFamily daughter-in-law Lindsay Watts This about sums up our ski day experience on April 8th, 2024 at Saddleback Maine. As stated on WGBH.ORG. Grant worked as an intern in at Quantrix, a company I worked for a while ago. He is on to big things at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and vice president of the American Astronomical Society. He captured the experience in words exactly right. Lost Valley - March 30, 2024 End of Season Pond Skim at Lost Valley Today was closing day at Lost Valley in Auburn, Maine, and it was a perfect bluebird day for it! The same terrain as the end of last week was open (Deer Run, Big Buck, Bobcat, Foxhole, Bear, & Squirrel Run), plus Possum, Rabbit Run, & Porcupine on natural snow with very thin cover. Temperatures were in the 40s, and skies were clear all day, leading to soft spring snow being found across the mountain. Deer Run Trail at Lost Valley There were lots of people at the mountain to participate in the end of s ..read more

On April 8th, a Total Solar Eclipse will travel through the heart of Maine's ski country offering for many, a once in a lifetime chance to view an eclipse. Many ski areas and communities in Maine are offering events to celebrate and view the eclipse.  This event is happening in rural Maine, during mud season, in areas that don't usually have a crush of people. The State of Maine has put out a resource guide on how to safely and enjoyably view the eclipse while respecting the communities and the environment. Please give it a read. We have a unique opportunity in Maine to be able ..read more

It was an amazing St. Patrick's day weekend at Saddleback Maine! It seems like every year March delivers for the mountain. Over TWO FEET OF SNOW has fallen over the past week with a St. Patrick's day gift of 6 inches greeting us today. This made the MaineSkiFamily parents very happy! Everything was open and in play. Just choose a trail (click here for our trail guide) and it was great. Visibility was in and out sometimes, but the snow quality and cover were top notch. Saturday was an amazing day on the mountain. The slopes were full, and the Saddleback team held the 2n ..read more

Hermon Mountain Ski Area - March 12, 2024 There wasn't a trace of natural snow left at Hermon Mountain yesterday, but they did a really good job pushing the man-made snow that they had around to get good coverage on their open terrain. With no relief in sight from the warm weather and rain, they announced that it would be their second to last day of operation for the season. Scenic Ski Trail There were four ways down the mountain still open, Slow Poke or Lazy Lane to Turkey Path or Longview, Scenic, and Cloud Nine. All had good cover with no bare spots, thanks to the excellent wor ..read more

Black Mountain of Maine - February 25, 2024 Today we visited Black Mountain of Maine in Rumford and it looks like it was one of the last days of winter conditions that we'll see for a bit. It was a great bluebird day at BMOM. The base area was busy, due to racing, but there was never a wait of more than a couple minutes to get on the chairs all day. Dead Cambridge Trail Everything was open, except for Kennebago and the very start of Magalloway, both due to unfrozen water drainages. Groomed terrain had a fast loose granular surface, while ungroomed terrain was very firm, but plenty sk ..read more

BigRock Mountain - February 18, 2024 One of the unique views in the State of Maine - Skiing and Windmills Trip Report by guest contributor Sam Shirley. Today's ski day was at BigRock ski area in Mars Hill, Maine and it was a chilly bluebird day. Temperatures were in the single digits and teens for most of the day, but the sun made it manageable. Everything was open, except for North Star and most of the advanced terrain to skier's left. Groomed terrain was excellent packed powder, but ungroomed terrain wasn't as great; there were a couple inches of powder on top of a very firm s ..read more

Big Moose Mountain - February 10, 2024 View of Moosehead Lake Region from Big Moose Mountain Trip Report by guest contributor Sam Shirley. Today, I finally got the chance to go snowcat skiing for the first time at Big Moose Mountain in Greenville, Maine! It was a very warm and sunny day of spring-like skiing on mashed potato snow. The warm temperatures have taken a toll on the snowpack, and there are thin spots on most trails across the mountain. Everything was open, except for Alley Way, Exterminator, and Saint John. The mountain was the busiest that I've ever seen it, and ..read more

Mt. Abram - February 4, 2024 View from the Snowfields Trail of Mt. Washington Trip Report by guest contributor Sam Shirley. Today's ski day was at Mt. Abram in Greenwood, Maine. Mt. Abram is just off Route 26 about 7 miles east of Bethel, Maine and 13 miles from the Sunday River Ski Resort. Despite what the trail report said, Mt. Abram was actually 100% open today! Eleven trails were listed as closed on the report, but they were all, in fact, open. It was a perfect bluebird day, with temperatures in the 20s and excellent packed powder conditions on groomed trails.  The Ro ..read more

Spruce Mountain - January 27, 2024 Trip Report by guest contributor Sam Shirley. Today was a free ski day at Spruce Mountain thanks to Pallet One of Livermore Falls. Spruce Mountain is located in Jay, Maine and I headed over to the mountain a little after noon. I had a a grilled cheese ($1) and a chicken finger basket ($5) for lunch, before starting skiing.  Every trail and all three rope tows were open, and the mountain was quite busy. Cover was very good, with only a few spots of  thin cover on the last pitch of Suicide. Every trail, except Bowl, had been groomed. Groomed ..read more
