If you want to be added to the list, email me wheretodrinkwinein@gmail.com with details on your lockdown offering Friends, here we are again. Bars, restaurants and non-essential shops are shuttered, our movements are limited, our personal rights curtailed for a second time this year. There are no two ways about it, it is Not Fun. But thankfully, alcohol counts as essential (of course) so wine is still on the menu.  Seeing as we’re all stuck indoors, there is little point in writing about where to drink wine in Europe. So I thought it might be a great time to highlight some of my favourite ..read more

Let’s not beat around the bush. It’s been a while. Some excuses (which are rather credible if you ask me): I caught Covid-19 in late March. It is Not Nice and it makes you want to do nothing other than sleep watch reruns of favourite TV shows. We changed the way our wine shop and bar is run, turning on a dime into an online retailer (apparently, in the business world this is called being agile. I call it desperation, born from necessity). It was also busy. Very busy. With furloughed staff, it was just my husband and I, both recovering from coronavirus. A good time was NOT had by all. But more ..read more

4 of the best wine bars and restaurants in Jerez
Where to drink wine in…

The best wine bars and restaurants in Jerez, Spain. Nestled in Andalucia lies a small city whose veins run deep with sherry and flamenco. A place where sherry isn’t a dirty word synonymous with a warm, sweet drink only your nan guzzles at Christmas, but is a way of life. A place where flamenco spontaneously bursts into life in streets and squares, where young girls practice their flamenco palos to the rhythmic claps of their parents sipping fino at midnight. But like everything, not all sherries (or sherry bars) are created equal, so let us guide you around the best the city has to offer ..read more

Taberna der Guerrita, Sanlucar de Barrameda
Where to drink wine in…

“Are you sure we’re going the right way?” My words to my husband as he navigated us from a long seafront walk up through a deathly quiet part of Sanlucar de Barrameda – a town that embodies the phrase ‘faded glory’ – in search of the Manzanilla palace that is Taberna der Guerrita. “Er, yeah, this is it.” he said, peering into a traditional taverna, overhung by a large flag proudly pronouncing “Serving Cruzcampo since 1978”. We walk into a bar that looks like so many in Andalucia; old, functional and characterful, with the ubiquitous sherry barrels behind the bar. We order two Manzanillas ..read more

5 of the best places for wine in Naples
Where to drink wine in…

Our favourite bars and restaurants in Naples for those who really love wine. View all our recommendations on ‘The Map’ If you visit Naples solely with wine in mind, then frankly, you’re doing it wrong. This is a chaotic, soulful, gritty city whose streets have more in common with those of large South East Asia conurbations than the genteel cities of Western Europe. The smell of fermenting pizza dough, wood fired ovens and melted cheese permeate the air. Cheap beer and spritz is available on every corner. This is Naples’ soul. But if you visit Naples and DON’T seek out its wine culture ..read more

Our picks of restaurants and bars for wine lovers in Trouville and Deauville, Normandy, France. Where the f**k is Trouville and Deauville, you may ask. These seaside destinations on Normandy’s north coast are seldom frequented by Brits but were immortalised by Monet, and are famous with Parisians, being just 2 hours from France’s capital. Luckily for me, my sister had the good sense to buy an apartment in Trouville around 15 years ago, and I’ve been visiting the towns almost every year since then. The towns, although only separated by one narrow river, are wildly different in feel. Tr ..read more

Where to drink wine in… AMSTERDAM

Sometimes I forget Amsterdam’s reputation for debauchery, drugs and decadence. I’ve never fancied hiring a prostitute, nor really felt the need to see one in a window. And my weed smoking days are – mostly – behind me. So the red light district holds little sway. For me, Amsterdam is about insanely good wine and food, great coffee and cycling. It seems my mid-thirties are well and truly upon me… Thanks to its cosmopolitan nature, Amsterdam has a very established wine and food scene with pretty much everything you could wish to find. Of course, like many of these established food and wine ci ..read more

Where to drink wine in… BILBAO

Gastronomically speaking, Bilbao has long been in the shadow of its neighbour, San Sebastian. Its tumultuous history as a centre of Basque independence unrest and a long shadow cast by its industrial roots hasn’t helped its reputation as a tourist hotspot. But times are changing and in recent years, Bilbao has become known as a gastronomic destination in its own right. And inevitably its wine scene has improved as a result. We found a city with its food and wine culture firmly rooted in Basque traditions but with plenty of places keen to innovate and mix up their offering. See all recomm ..read more
