" I started this drawing over a year ago. It's been haunting me from the moment I started; filling me with a feeling of despair for taking on a task that seemed too large to complete. I lost the sense of achievement that usually carries me through a drawing, but found my drive again near the end of last year. I'm still processing what it means to dedicate so much time to something and almost feel like a prisoner to your own work. I'm so relieved and also very proud to be done with this. This video is of the last few weeks of work, I hope you enjoy it." Jono Dry (b. 1989) is a sel ..read more

Edouard Manet - Olympia, 1863 "There' s no symmetry in nature. One eye is never exactly the same as the other. There's always a difference. We all have a more or less crooked nose and an irregular mouth." Olympia's body as well as her gaze is unabashedly confrontational. She defiantly looks out as her servant offers flowers from one of her male suitors. Although her hand rests on her leg, hiding her pubic area, the reference to traditional female virtue is ironic; a notion of modesty is notoriously absent in this work. A contemporary critic denounced Olympia's "shamelessly flexed" l ..read more
