Spring Into Action

Spring themed projects have not exactly been my thing on this blog.  I’ve done a couple here and there over the years, but “Spring” is a tough topic for someone like me.  When I blog about DIY projects or Decor, it’s because I’m making those things for myself, or I’m decorating my home.  Typical Spring colors are pretty much the opposite aesthetic of mine, so decorating my home for Spring has been an easy theme to just avoid or skip over each year.  This year I’ve decided to face the challenge and begin working toward a way to bring Spring into my home… My way.  Star ..read more

I don’t think I’ve ever done a copycat project before, but this one could not be helped!!  After hearing that Grandin Road had released some “Raven inspired” merchandise, I don’t think my fingers could type quick enough to get to their website.  And there it was…. a black three-tiered Raven server (pictured below).  I had to have it.  And then I saw the price.  Suddenly I found myself in one of those all too familiar situations where I think to myself …. “I can make that”.  And here we are. One of the things I found attractive about Grandin Road’s stand (be ..read more

This time of year, I can’t help but look forward to seeing all of the Halloween decorations that stores put on their shelves.  Of course there are always a few treasures I can’t live without, but more often than not I’m left feeling like the selection could have been much better.  Last year I began taking matters into my own hands…. transforming those ho-hum Halloween finds into treasures I could love year round.  This year, I’m kicking the season off with another one of those transformations with these Gothic Antique Snake Candle Holders…. OK… so for the quick back story for ..read more

It’s time to celebrate one of my favorite National Holidays….. International Bat Appreciation Day.  On April 17, the world honors these special little creatures.  In past years I have celebrated Bat Appreciation Day with a project.  A couple of years ago it was this Velvet Lined Bat Trinket Box, and last year these Chocolate Bat Pops.  This year I’m going to do something a little different….. A Bat Lover’s Shopping & Gift Guide! It is more important than ever to support small independent businesses.  To help with this initiative, Etsy has launched a #StandwithSmall ..read more

I’m finding it difficult to choose the right words to open this blog post.  My mind is so consumed by the virus sweeping across our world, that it seems trivial to say “hi – lets talk about crafts!”  But the truth is… for those of us that have survived the virus, or have managed to avoid it… sometimes we need something light and simple to focus on.  I see so many people out there trying to do or say positive and uplifting things to help everyone get through such an incredibly strange and difficult time.  So I am hopeful that this tutorial can not only offer something fun to pass the time, bu ..read more

It just wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without me doing some sort of Anatomical Heart Tutorial!  Every year I find a way to have a bit of fun with this Not-so-traditional Valentine “Staple”.  Two years ago, it was the Chocolate Anatomical Heart Cupcake Toppers, and last year I adorned Dinnerware with Anatomical Hearts.   Now I’m back in the kitchen with a No Bake Bleeding Heart Oreo Cookie Cake. Last year, I made a VERY complicated cake for Valentine’s Day.  It was an Open Book Cake…. a cake carved and decorated to look like an open book.  I got a ton of accolades for the finished product, but r ..read more

Cupid’s Arrow

Cupid…. a traditional Valentine figure.  A sweet cherub with a bow and arrow.  I’ve always found ways to incorporate cherubs into my Gothic Valentine decor …. did you see the Napkin Rings I made for Valentine’s Day two years ago, or the Cake Stand I made last year?  What I have always overlooked was that arrow!  You certainly must know me well enough by now to know that Red Arrows with little Heart Arrowheads is not what I mean.  Instead… Gothic Black Feathered Valentine Arrows… I immediately envisioned a vase full of them, and I went to work. I wanted to maintain some of the traditional elem ..read more
