Research funded by the US government has found no link between the legalisation of cannabis and consumption amongst adolescents. The study compared middle-school student cannabis use rates in Nevada and New Mexico, analyzing data from 2017 and 2019 state-run surveys. Notably, adult-use cannabis sales were legal in Nevada, while New Mexico permitted only medical cannabis. In both states, researchers observed an increase in the proportion of students who had ever consumed cannabis, as well as those who had consumed it within the past 30 days. In Nevada, the percentage of middle-school students r ..read more

Vendors on the former #1 biggest darknet marketplace, Incognito, got a double whammy of bad luck when they logged in on March 5th. Not only had the administrator – a guy known only as Pharaoh – closed the market and stolen all of the money held in users’ online accounts, but he’d left a rather shocking message to extort the people who sold drugs through his website. “We have accumulated a list of private messages, transaction info and order details over the years. You’ll be surprised at the number of people that relied on our auto-encrypt functionality. And by the way, your messages and transa ..read more

While research into cannabis and its impact on all aspects of our health has undeniably skyrocketed in recent years, the internet is still jam-packed with contradictory reports of the true effects of the drug. A study involving adult twins has found little evidence that ‘moderate’ cannabis causes negative effects on mental health. The study, published in the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science, analysed a sample of 4,078 American adult twins over 30 years to investigate the effects of lifetime cannabis use. Researchers assessed twins who lived together as children and shared either 50% or 100% of their genes, comparing twins who had different levels of exposure to cannabis. By using this method, the study was able to account for genetic and shared environmental factors that could le ..read more

A study of data published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence has found that cannabis legalisation in Canada has led to a reduction in retail sales of beer. Researchers examined alcohol retail data in Canada from 2012 to 2020 to understand the changes in the volume of beer and spirits sold after the legalisation of cannabis in October 2018. The study found that beer sales dropped significantly shortly after legalisation, and have continued to drop since. The sales of spirts however have not been impacted.  “Canada-wide beer sales fell by 96 hectoliters per 100,000 population (p=0.0 ..read more
