Microsoft has been struggling to find a way to compete with Chromebooks, which have exploded in popularity during the pandemic. Its best attempt yet is the Surface Laptop SE, an education-focused laptop that has just recently gone on sale. Unlike some past Microsoft devices, the Surface Laptop SE is designed to be easily repairable. It has even posted a teardown video showing how repair-friendly the laptop is.  The Surface Laptop SE is not a high-end piece of hardware, and it doesn’t look like one. Notebooks with slim designs, metal bodies, and ultra-high-resolution OLED panels make devi ..read more

Microsoft resurfaced the Surface division Wednesday with a number of refreshes, launches, and updates. The Surface Pro 8 was announced, as expected, with support for 120Hz refresh rates, user-replaceable SSDs, and Thunderbolt 4 ports. This is the first major redesign for the Surface Pro family since the Surface Pro 3 eight years ago. The system now more closely resembles the Surface Pro X, including the use of that machine’s 3:2 form factor. The screen resolution has also been very slightly bumped, from 2736×1824 to 2880×1920. The new Thunderbolt ports. The Surface Pro 8 keeps Microsoft’s pr ..read more

Microsoft is continuing its quest to make Xbox Game Pass a first-class contender for gaming. The company has now introduced support for dual-screen gaming on devices like the Surface Duo. Here’s how the feature works: Fire up Game Pass on a device such as the dual-screened Surface Duo, and your game controls will be mapped to the bottom screen, with the top reserved for displaying your actual game. Developers can tailor the way controls are displayed on the lower panel, allowing different games to offer different buttons or control layouts. Games can also support the Surface Duo’s built-in g ..read more

Microsoft made a pair of hardware announcements today. First, the company debuted a surprise $549 Surface Laptop Go. This is the first time we’ve seen Microsoft push the Surface Laptop family to a price point this low, though there are some hefty compromises that may make this a limited-utility purchase. Second, the company announced a refreshed Surface Pro X, based on its new SQ2 processor. Let’s talk about the Surface Laptop Go first. It starts at $549 and offers a smaller, 12.4-inch display, with a 1536×1024 resolution. That works out to 148 PPI, and it’s definitely a step down compar ..read more

Credit: Feature image by Collins via Wikipedia, image is CC BY-SA 3.0 Microsoft has announced it will close all of its physical store locations. Officially, this is due to COVID-19. The memo announcing the change is long on PR-speak, short on actual information. We are told, for example, that “As we look forward, we start a new chapter for Microsoft Store,” and “As part of our business plan, we announced a strategic change in our retail operations,” — a strategic change, you say? How delightful! — “including closing Microsoft Store physical locations.” This seems less like a strategic change ..read more

Microsoft has made two long-awaited updates to its Surface lineup. On the low-end, there’s the new Surface Go 2, which is slightly larger and substantially faster than its predecessor. There’s also a new premium Surface Book 3 with an even higher price tag than the Surface Book 2 and the latest flagship Intel chips.  The Surface Go was Microsoft’s attempt to take a bite out of the iPad’s increasing productivity market share. That device had its fair share of shortcomings, but Microsoft has addressed some pain points with the Surface Go 2. This device is a little thinner than the first-ge ..read more

The Surface Neo will run Windows 10X, a tweaked version of Microsoft's operating system for dual-screen devices. Microsoft gave us a preview of its dual-screen future late last year with the Surface Duo and Neo, but that future might be further away than we thought. According to a new report, Microsoft’s Chief Product Officer Panos Panay told his teams that the Windows-based Surface Neo won’t ship in 2020 as initially planned. The company also won’t allow its partners to ship any dual-screen devices with Windows 10X this year.  The Surface Neo is a striking device that harkens back to th ..read more

Intel has launched a new suite of 10th Generation mobile CPUs in the Comet Lake family. Like other recent product launches, these chips are also based on 14nm (Ice Lake notwithstanding), but Intel has pulled out the frequency stops for this lineup of parts. The previous 9th Gen Core i7 CPUs top out at 6 cores and 4.6GHz Turbo, while the 9th Gen Mobile Core i9 family ran up to eight cores and 5GHz. With 10th Gen, Intel is pushing the envelope further, with several chips landing at 5GHz or above in both the Core i7 and Core i9 families: So, how much is CPU performance changing? The top-end 1098 ..read more

Surface Laptop 3 Review: Can Ice Lake Freeze Out a Core i7-7700HQ From 2016?

Note: While the ExtremeTech publishing system only allows us to list one author per story, sometime-ET author Jessica Hall also spent significant time with the Surface Laptop 3 and contributed her own experiences, thoughts, and evaluation of the laptop to this review. The Surface Laptop 3 is the third iteration of Microsoft’s “standard” laptop and one of the all-around nicest systems I’ve ever used. I’ve hammered on the Surface Laptop family in the past because I didn’t think the hardware deserved the price premium. I was curious, however, to see what kind of additional value Ice Lake could br ..read more
