Insane, I know. Let me explain… My husband and I are a little nomadic. As typical Gen X’s we love to keep our options open. Our idea of a nightmare way of life is what most of the population strive for: a comfortable existence in a village they call home, where friends and family are close by and people in the pub know them well. Whilst I totally understand this sentiment, and on occasions I’m a little envious of such clear goals (not to mention the emotional benefits of a consistent support network) when I think of staying put in the same house, village or even country for more than ..read more

Following on from my last blog post on Travel Hacking #3 - Car Hire tips this post looks at cruise deals Earning points through credit cards Cashback sites Hire car tips Cruise deals Use comparison site cruise deals I’ve signed up to lots of cruise deal newsletters for departures in the UK, and to be honest, most are really spammy. I’ve also signed up to the big cruise websites, and they don’t seem to share their great deals with their database. The only I’ve not unsubscribed to is Cruise Sheet. They send regular e ..read more

I love travelling. I’m a nomad at heart. But travelling can get quite expensive. Like all our spending I like to be mindful and optimise every penny to get the best holiday experience for the lowest cost. I don’t mind paying £130 a night for a room, but if I can get the same room for £115 with a quick web search, and then get £13 back through cashback, then heck, why not? That’s £23 (or £27.6++ pre-tax) I’d rather spend on BBQ sardines and a carafe of wine. On top of that if I can earn some points towards to the flights, for no extra cost! Here’s some travel hacks I’ve used with s ..read more

View from our lovely off-grid farm Following from last week's post Intuitive Fire #1, I continue to reflect on the #FI-Wins I’ve made over the decades. There was no strategy, no real intent, just something that made sense at the time. I realise now that I'm an Intuitive FI. Mini-retirement #1 So at 27 I was totally burned out by my not-very-nice media employers. I was totally exhausted and was not well looked after. I resigned from my job, sold my car, left the house to my brother to sort out (see previous post) and purchased a one-way ticket to Hong Kong. My parents were aghast ..read more

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As I sit here well into my mid-40s it’s all too easy to think of all the things I’ve done in my life that weren’t FI and how I could be FI now, if only I’d had this information at my fingertips when I was 20. I call these bad moves my #FI-Fails. Being a bit of an optimist however, I also get great satisfaction when I reflect on all the great FI moves I’ve made without even knowing what FI was. I call these my #FI-Wins. In this post I reflect on the #FI-Wins I’ve made over the decades. There was no strategy, no real intent, just something that made sen ..read more

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS*.  The Financial Independence (FI) movement was made popular in no small part by the (slightly famous) US by blogger Mr Money Moustache. His philosophy is that you can determine when you can retire based on the percentage of your take-home income that you save.  This is explained in his exceptional blog post 'The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement'. He states that your savings rate is determined by these two things: How much you take home each year and how much you can live on.   His calculations are based on a (much debated) 4% ru ..read more
