This year has been a bit of a slow down in terms of blogging for me, and I apologize! First, we didn’t take a long roadtrip like we had the previous two years, with many new experiences. And second, I changed jobs in August, so I’m basically starting fresh in terms of vacation time. That doesn’t mean we haven’t tried to get out and camp as much as we can! We had planned a September trip with some friends of ours to caravan with our RV to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point as it is commonly known in Arizona) in Sonora, Mexico. This would be our first time in Mexico with an RV, and my first time in Me ..read more

The Ultimate Campfire Turkey for Your Thanksgiving Camping Trip Pit Roasted Turkey A few years back we were on a pre-Thanksgiving camping trip with some friends. Part of the weekend included a potluck dinner that included a few different turkeys that others had brought. Some grilled their turkeys while others roasted them over a fire. One turkey stood out though, a pit roasted turkey that was cooked in a hole in the ground. The turkey was super delicious! The meat was super tender and falling off the bone! This year we decided to give it a try for one of the two turkeys we cooked for our famil ..read more

South Dakota is usually known for Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, the Black Hills, Sturgis, and the Mitchell Corn Palace. South Dakota has a lot of history and interesting sites to see. Did you know that the state was once home to 150 Minuteman II nuclear missiles buried beneath the plains? At the height of the Cold War the United States had 1,000 Minuteman II nuclear missiles buried beneath the western plains in Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana. Today only 450 Minuteman III missiles remain surrounding F.E. Warren AFB (Colorado/Nebraska/Wyoming), Mino ..read more

Don’t worry we’re still here! I haven’t posted many new articles or updates lately because we haven’t camped much this fall! We have literally been once since we got back from our big summer trip! Unfortunately the summer roadtrip took us a little overboard on expenses because of issues with the trailer, etc, so I’ve been busy working more overtime to pay off some of the credit card debt we stacked up. Just to throw more sand in the wound, our dually began making an awful rumbling noise part way through our summer roadtrip. The noise had been getting progressively worse. After several months ..read more

Don’t Let a Sticky Black Tank Valve Make for a Crappy Day!

No one likes sticky valves. A sticky black tank valve can literally ruin your day! It ruined mine several times over our three week trip this summer… Nothing is worse than going to pop the sewer pipe cap on the fifth wheel and getting a bath of brown foul smelling liquid (and solids)! Trust me, I took this bath many times! Our black tank problems began with a handle that wasn’t closing all the way. For us, our black tank and it’s valve for the main bathroom (we have two in our toy hauler) is located behind a corrugated underbelly panel. The valve is controlled by way of a several foot long cab ..read more

One of the most hotly debated topics out there among 5th wheel RV owners is gooseneck vs traditional 5th wheel hitches. Front and center in that fight are two companies: Andersen and B&W. Before we start down this road, let me preface this by saying that this is NOT an Andersen hitch bashfest! Andersen is a great company that makes very high quality products and the Andersen Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection is one of those! Our Humble Beginnings as 5th Wheel Owners Andersen hitch in the 2012 Ram 3500 We bought our first 5th wheel in the Spring of 2019. At the time I felt like I knew very lit ..read more

A common question many RV owners ask is “How can I increase my towing capacity?” Many of us purchase a tow vehicle to fit the RV we already have, but what happens if you want to upgrade to a bigger or heavier trailer later on? For many this has them scrambling to find a different tow vehicle with a greater tow rating. Rest assured though, you don’t always have to run out and drop thousands on a new truck. There are several simple ways to help you increase your towing capacity. In fact I think it is entirely possible to safely exceed your maximum tow rating so long as you pay attention to othe ..read more

Troubleshooting 5th Wheel Landing Gear

When you think of a travel trailer, you may think of a single jack holding up the tongue of a trailer weighing just a couple of thousand pound..That’s light! But a 5th wheel features two forward jacks, also known as “landing gear.” These two jacks support a significant amount of weight! If you’re 5th wheel owner, you may be aware of two different systems available for lifting and leveling a fifth wheel. Some 5th wheels use a hydraulic multi-jack leveling system while others use an electric jack system that requires the user to level the trailer themselves. Let’s talk electric jacks. That’s wh ..read more
