The 2024 Eclipse in Potsdam, New York

The 2017 total eclipse in Nebraska (full writeup and pictures here) was a profound and moving experience. While seeing a partial eclipse is interesting, being in the totality is hard to describe to those who haven’t experienced it. In the totality, you have a chance to see the corona, and crazy stuff happens. The light is surreal and indescribable and nothing make sense. Animals can freak out. Thin clouds can evaporate. The temperature drops and the wind can change direction. It’s unbelievable and crazy and unlike anything else. I’ve seen probably a dozen tornadoes and an erupting volcano, an ..read more

I have written and thought a lot about the evolution of show technology; I have several articles about this topic linked here. I was honored to be asked to do a virtual presentation on behalf of ESTA for the NAMM “Believe in Music” online event up January 21-23, 2022, and I realized today that I never posted it publicly. This is the video from that presentation ..read more

Photo from cinesite.com who worked on the show I’ve written a lot about the maturation of show technology (see articles linked here), and I think the Bourne Stuntacular at Universal Studios Florida is probably the best example of this yet. It’s a stunning integration of video, physical effects, and—what really makes it work—excellent lighting and sound integration. Spatial sound is used very effectively throughout, and it seems that the lighting options possible for the physical show were considered when the videos were produced. The timing of the sequences is incredibly precise. We were luck ..read more

IAAPA 2023

The IAAPA Expo, the amusement and theme park trade show, is the most fun show I ever go to. There are bouncy castles, roller coasters and all kind of stuff set up inside. There’s free food hand outs, and everything you need for an amusement park, from trash cans to prizes. And then there’s the “high tech” section, which is the real reason I go, to see long time friends and colleagues and what they are up to. It’s hard to believe that I hadn’t been since 2018, but that’s when my time at CityTech really got overwhelming, and then the pandemic, etc. Here’s some random photos from the show, with a ..read more
