Bleeders (1997)

In the 1980s and 1990s, stories by H.P. Lovecraft were mostly adapted into B-horror movies that had difficulties conveying the intense atmosphere of pessimism and existential dread inherent to many of his works onto the screen. They would usually fill this gap with an excess of gore effects, and the majority of them turned out to be reasonably entertaining. Two positive outliers from that period were Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator and Dan O’Bannon’s The Resurrected. O’Bannon also co-wrote the script for Bleeders (aka Hemoglobin), which was an adaptation of one of Lovecraft’s lesser known stories ..read more

The Viking Sagas (1995)

Before the 2000s, Viking culture and characters did only make occasional appearances in American cinema, but movies like the 13th Warrior and Valhalla Rising reintroduced the savage warriors to a wider audience. The Viking Sagas was made before this revival, and can be considered a spiritual B-movie predecessor especially to Valhalla Rising. Both movies share a mystical atmosphere and stunning photography of the barren Scandinavian landscape. The film may also have been an attempt to recreate the vibe of Icelandic classics such as Hrafn Gunnlaugsson’s masterful Raven trilogy of Viking adventur ..read more

The Seventh Curse (1986)

Director Lam Ngai Kai is mostly remembered for his gory martial arts comedy Story of Ricky, but a lot of his productions were pretty wild. The Cat, Erotic Ghost Story and Peacock King are memorable films, but no entry from his filmography was as bonkers as The Seventh Curse. Kai created a film that looks like it drew equal amounts of inspiration from Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Italian horror exploitation classics, and combined it with high-octane martial arts action, and the very special type of humor inherent to many Hongkong films from that era. Dr. Yuen is a researcher and martial art ..read more

Fist of the North Star (1995)

This was the big one for Gary Daniels, the opportunity to show that he can carry a movie with a medium-sized budget on his own. Daniels became known among action movie fans with a couple of low-budget flicks in the early 1990s, the type where I always wanted to fast forward to the action scenes (but almost never did). The best thing about them certainly was seeing Daniels and his incredible martial arts skills in action. Fist of the North Star was his first lead role in a larger production, even though the movie still went straight to video. But a 7 Million USD budget, a capable director, and ..read more

The Scythian (2018)

The former Soviet Union brought fourth many endearing fairly tale and Fantasy movies that were primarily aimed at a younger audience. The modern Russian film industry followed up on this tradition at least rudimentary. Productions such as Furious, The Gogol movie series, and The Scythian (a.k.a. The Last Warrior and Skif) were certainly not made for children, but retained the somewhat diffuse mystical atmosphere that seems to be inherent to Russian Fantasy movies. The Scythian is the latest representative of this new school of Russian Fantasy. In Ancient Eastern Europe, Lutobor is a loyal serv ..read more

The evil warlord Voltan rules with terror over a once peaceful kingdom. His brother Hawk bears the only weapon that can stop the tyranny, a magical sword with incredible power. He sets out to defeat Voltan, and assembles a group of heroes worthy of the task. The first epic fantasy movie that deserved the label arguably was Ralph Bakshi’s animated take on the Lord of the Rings saga, which came out in 1978. The next one – and that was two years before the genre expanded rapidly after the release of Conan The Barbarian – was Hawk The Slayer. The movie had the dubious honor of getting thrashed by ..read more

An adventurous journey begins to free the country from the grip of evil cyborg Ninjutsu master Chi.
