She has a history of incontinence, suspecting a neurological injury as well. Esperanza, or “Espy,” is a 3 year old female goat who lives at Charlie’s Acres Farm Sanctuary. Espy has some mild neurological symptoms and was born with only partially developed rear hooves. Her underdeveloped hooves made it painful for her to walk and bear weight on her hind legs for even a short time or distance. In fall of 2020, the amazing team at Charlie’s Acres reached out to Dr. Ilana Strubel, our Partner veterinarian in the San Francisco Bay area, who wanted to know what could be made to assist Espy in increasing her comfort and mobility. We began by asking the Dr. Strubel and th ..read more

Ripley, a 9y Labrador Retriever, first tore his left Achilles in 2018, and healed well with rest and PRP injections. Unfortunately, Ripley tore his Achilles again and presented to Dr. McNamara at Maine Veterinary Medical Center in August 2021 for a consult. Dr. McNamara prescribed a custom articulating tarsal orthosis (dog ankle brace) with a motion-limiter bar to support the tarsus while the tendon heals and allow for gradual reloading of the Achilles complex. Ripley’s metatarsophalangeal joint range of motion was restricted so we also fabricated the device with some external wedge on the pa ..read more

The Doctor is a 12 year old female spayed pit bull who works with our wonderful San Francisco area partner clinic, A Well Adjusted Pet. She suffered an acute-on-chronic injury to her left cranial cruciate ligament around April of 2021, and her owners chose a custom stifle orthosis along with conservative management, rather than putting her through surgery at her age. Their goals were to stabilize her left stifle to allow rehabilitation and eventual normal play in the yard and at the beach. Because of her classic pittie build with muscular thighs, she needed a soft neoprene suspension cuff to ..read more

Djembe is a 11-year-old, FS, Malamute from Alaska. She was diagnosed with a CCL (ACL) tear and started rehabilitation in November 2020. Djembe is a very active dog who loves to go on long walks with her owners. OrthoPets fabricated a standard stifle device (dog knee brace) with a tarsal cuff (ankle cuff) for added suspension. The standard stifle will help stabilize the stifle joint and prevent tibial thrust. Djembe’s Veterinarian’s goal for the stifle orthotic is to provide better comfort and mobility for Djembe. Djembe was fitted for her stifle orthotic in January 2021 and has been doing gre ..read more

Arthur with Short Noses Only Rescue Team (SNORT) is an 8 month French Bulldog who presented to Dr. McNamara at MVMC with bilateral tarsal (ankle) contracture. Due to Arthur’s age, and the presence of calcaneal sores from bearing weight on the plantar surface of the tarsus, OrthoPets recommended fabrication of bilateral House Slippers. The goal was to provide an interior that is soft and comfortable for delicate skin, and an exterior to help with transitions through stance phases. The House Slippers have a very forgiving rocker bottom for initial contact and roll through, and in conjuncti ..read more

Fredo is a 7 year old neutered male cockapoo who presented with a brachial plexus complex injury following a jump out of the car that landed badly. OrthoPets has several different options for patients with this diagnosis and presentation depending on the level of function and therapeutic goals of the veterinary team.  The best guide for if a brachial plexus or radial nerve patient will be able return to “normal” function function with an orthosis is the presence of triceps function, but even without triceps function, an orthosis can still benefit a patient by protecting the paw and dist ..read more
