The uniform outward growth of the fungus results in the development of rings. Once the material is exhausted, the fairy ring will disappear. This may take many years. Several fairy rings may appear close together, especially in lawns that were previously wooded areas. The Language of Flowers: Bouquet Stories
Wellness Garden

Whether it be a budding, new relationship bouquet of clematis, rose, and dill, or a get-out-of-the-doghouse one of narcissus and daisy; flowers speak a language of their own and all flowers have their own language. Some Flower History Lady Mary Wortley Montague, wife of the British ambassador to Constantinople, introduced the language of flowers [floriography] to the European aristrocrats during the early 18th century. Symbolic meanings were attached to flowers, and by arranging them in a bouquet or ‘tussie-mussie’, a message was conveyed.   “Le Language des Fleurs” by Madame Charlot ..read more

Plants That Tantalize All 5 Senses
Wellness Garden

When designing wellness gardens (or any garden for that matter), I prefer to use plants that tantalize all 5 senses. Although most gardens look pretty, many don’t offer more than sight for sense stimulation. The purpose of a wellness garden is to distract people from their current issues and to make them feel better. When senses are distracted by sights, sounds and smells, the mind can be easily swayed to relax and live in the moment. Here are a few of my favorite plants, listed by the sense they arouse. I see you: These plants are all long blooming or have large blooms. Phlox (all types) Ech ..read more

Pamela Dittmer McKuen recently interviewed me for her article featured in the Spring 2020 issue of Wellness Lounge Magazine. I really enjoyed talking to Pam about the concepts of Wellness Gardens and why sharing their concept is so important to me. I want everyone to understand that their landscaping can be so much more than just green, boring and a chore. Wellness Gardens are more than just nice landscaping. They entice all of your senses to bring you into a more relaxed state of mind. Many people use the stimulation promoted by the plants to practice mindful meditation. Continue reading at W ..read more

Beware of the Mulch Volcano
Wellness Garden

Creating mulch volcanos is one of the worse things you can do to a tree. I am so saddened when I see trees mulched up to their lower branches, called ‘Mulch Volcanos’. If the truck of your tree looks the same as a telephone pole, there’s too much mulch on it!!! The tree should flare out where it comes out of the ground. In my opinion, this has to be the worst volcano I’ve seen in my entire life… Monkey See, Monkey Do…. Sadly, homeowners see mulch volcanos and think this is the correct way to mulch, and the vicious cycle continues. Professional landscapers do it all the time ..read more
