Line is an essential component of design used for creating division, direction, organisation, movement and emphasis. They can be clearly well defined and easily detectible, or alternatively they can be subtle and invisible. In design the simple line has the ability to influence the space within and all around, achieved by either linking everything together bringing structure, balance and unity to the whole composition or in contrast creating lines of division by separating or sub-dividing spaces. DESIGN CASE STUDY #3
Long narrow paths can be slightly off-putting particularly when they don’t seem to lead anywhere. In this Bangor garden - the path seemed to run into a large wall at the end but in reality it led onto a main route connecting the patio to the front garden.
To make the path a little more interesting - the corner was literally cut by placing a seating area in the wall which immediately opens up the tight intersection between the two paths.

‘Square peg in a round hole’ or ‘Round peg in a square hole.’
A problem not unusual for most garden designers or in any design profession. Geometric and curved shapes are often very difficult to arrange together in a single composition.
