5 Controversial Tips for Catching More - And Bigger - Brook Trout

I've been getting a lot of messages recently about chasing brook trout in Maryland, so I figured I'd do a quick post on some tactics I use when fishing brookie streams. Some of these tips may be up for debate (controversy!), but I wanted to keep this post fresh and provide some alternative ways to the traditional thinking. While I fish for brook trout primarily in Maryland, these tips will apply to any brook trout stream in the Mid-Atlantic (and even out west). And if you disagree with me, comment below or message me on Instagram - how fun is a good debate?! 1. Use a Longer Rod: I'm sure you ..read more

Guest Post: By Mike Slepesky Two years ago, I was convinced I could be the next YouTube fishing sensation. I watched channels like Backyard Angling, Allegheny Native, WildFlyProductions, Hardman Fishing Adventures, Fish Hawk, and Wooly Bugged for inpiration. Having watched almost all of their videos - seeing their general techniques filming, judging their approach to the water, witnessing how they interacted with their subscribers, and so forth - I decided to start down the path of creating my own channel, My first step was receiving a Christmas gift of a GoPro Hero 5 Black. I got right to wor ..read more

Guest Post and Photos: By Andrew Sarcinello ,One of the great things about trout fishing in Maryland is that despite its dense population, it has a few places left that are well-kept secrets among small groups of anglers. There’s nothing I love more than discovering a high-quality, small stream full of unpressured wild trout. About five years ago, my searches brought me to one small mountain stream that was better than any I’d ever fished before, and it seemed as if very few others knew about it. But over the past two or three years, word of mouth caused a steady increase in pressure on my old ..read more

My Top Flies and Lures for Striped Bass

I've been getting a lot of questions from our blog readers about targeting striped bass. So similar to our Striper Flies Clouser Minnow: You really can't go wrong fishing a clouser minnow for striped bass of all sizes. It does such a simple and effective job of mimicking a variety of baitfish. I like a smaller clouser minnow specifically in early and late season applications, when fish may be keying in on small prey, or wanting a more subtle presentation. I'm typically carrying a variety of sizes, weights, and colors to match depth, current, and determine what the fish want. You can also pla ..read more

Maryland Slime Darts

It was hard to believe I hadn't caught a pickerel on the fly in my entire life. Honestly, it had been almost 10 years since I've even tangled with one on a spinning rod. I guess the waterways I have fished most often in the last 10 years just don't hold populations of pickerel - or slime darts (as I quickly discovered is a fitting name after hooking my first last weekend). I hit the water with my good friend Andrew - a pickerel fanatic by all accounts - in search for the sometimes elusive, but typically voracious, pickerel. This trip also served as the maiden voyage for my new canoe (seen belo ..read more

Trout Tips for the Dead of Winter

It wasn't more than a week and a half ago that most of the Mid-Atlantic was enjoying 70 degree weather in January. However, those seasonably warm days seem to be a thing of the past with air temperatures - and water temperatures - dropping rapidly into the low 30s. For some, this may spell the end of fly fishing opportunities. For most of us (as demonstrated by a recent Instagram poll of mine), the cold only presents an minor inconvenience to our sometimes unreasonable mission to spend as many days as possible on the water. For me, winter can be a very rewarding time to be on the stream. Not ..read more

Article and Photos By: Owen Rossi ( An Early Start The day began with the unbearable sound of my alarm going off. However, instead of hitting snooze as I normally do, I shot right out of bed. It was time to go fishing. I grabbed a quick breakfast, packed up my gear, and headed out to a spring creek which I heard had some productive fishing this time of year. I was meeting up with some buddies of mine from Instagram who were far more experienced on this water than I was, so I was excited to see what advice they had in store for me. After an hour of anxious driving, I arrived, rigged up, and he ..read more

Fall Striped Bass on the Chesapeake Bay

As summer temperatures fade, trees begin to shed their leaves, and I unpack the cold weather fishing gear, my mind always shifts to one fish - the striped bass. Fall weather defines striped bass fishing for many here in the Mid-Atlantic, or maybe I should say that striped bass fishing defines the fall. For me, the latter is certainly true. Quality striped bass fishing can be found in the Chesapeake Bay year round, but the fall is when striper fishing really kicks into high gear. Cooling waters spread fish across the region in hot pursuit of bait; Menhaden (often called bunker) and bay anchovi ..read more

Living in Washington D.C. seemed like a fishing death sentence when I first moved here from central Pennsylvania over 7 years ago. In some ways, living in the D.C. region has certainly made things more challenging. Reaching wild trout streams once took me only 5 minutes - now it takes at least 55. But in many ways, Washington D.C. is an epicenter for fishing variety; a central node providing access to many different types of fishing. A few weekends back, Frank and I ventured outside of the bustling beltway. We made a seemingly short drive to chase a fish species we both hadn't caught on the f ..read more
