A New Measure for Weather: “Outdoor Days”
Good Nature
by Candice Gaukel Andrews

To help give climate change a personal meaning, a new measure called “outdoor days” is being used to describe the number of days per year that outdoor temperatures are comfortable enough for you to engage in your normal outdoor activities. It’s just a little more than a month into spring, and I’m already wondering if the summer of 2024 will set a new heat record just as the summer of 2023 did. But, this time, more than setting records and reading dire statistics, I’m thinking about how those temperatures will truly feel to us. And I’m not alone, for climate change is now becoming personal. Celebrating Bat Conservation: From Chiroptophobia to Coexistence
Good Nature
by Megan Brief

Though the groundhog may forecast the end of winter, nature has a bounty of more subtle signs that indicate the arrival of spring. Crocuses, hyacinths and snowdrops are the first to burst from the thawing ground. Soft, sweet-smelling magnolias flutter in the breeze and electric-yellow forsythia hums with the beating wings of bees. Longer days make for warmer nights and April showers bring a lot more than May flowers… Mayflies and mosquitos enter a breeding frenzy. Thick, buzzing clouds billow in the humid air and drown out the moonlight sonata of the spring peepers. Suddenly, your sunset strol ..read more

Climate Change Is Making Greenland Greener, But Is It a Good Thing?
Good Nature

History and geography teachers often point out the silliness of Greenland’s name. The Arctic country is covered with a barren ice sheet spanning 660,000 square miles, or roughly 80% of the country’s surface. There’s not exactly much green to be found! According to the Icelandic Sagas, Eric the Red, who had been exiled from Iceland for murder, came to Greenland’s glacial shores in the late 10th century and dubbed the place “Grœnland” in the hopes of attracting settlers to the remote outpost with the false promise of abundant forests and fields. He may have been just a little ahead of his time ..read more

“You cannot love game and hate predators … the land is one organism,” said American writer, conservationist and environmentalist Aldo Leopold. American writer, conservationist, ecologist, environmentalist, forester, naturalist, philosopher and scientist Aldo Leopold once said that “harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left. That is to say, you cannot love game and hate predators … the land is one organism.” Although Aldo Leopold lived and worked in the United States from about 1909 (when he started with the U.S. Forest Service) t ..read more
