Finding Meaning
Gold in September

September 23, 2005: 15 years ago today, life changed forever. I thought I was aware, I thought I appreciated the fight, I thought I understood the challenges and realities of cancer, and I thought I was doing everything in my power to be an advocate, ambassador, and change-agent. The reality . . . I knew nothing. On September 23, 2005, it was my sixth sense of mother’s intuition that knew something was terribly wrong. I would give anything to have been mistaken. Taking Jack to the ER on an afternoon just like this one turned into a nightmare I will in no way ever wake from. I will never forget ..read more

Growing Gold to Beat Childhood Cancer

In this earth, in this soil, in this pure field, let’s not plant any seed other than seeds of compassion and love.” ~ Rumi The philanthropic efforts of the families, friends, communities, and team members that have contributed to the mission and vision of the childhood cancer endeavors my family has spearheaded, supported, and sustained have all been focused on one purpose: growth. In 2009, a thoughtful, dedicated group of volunteers came together and, in only six weeks, created the first I Back Jack Foundation golf event. The goal was to provide funding to develop and cultivate a new treatmen ..read more

Are you Listening to me? How often in the last 18 years has every high school graduate heard those words? Parents, teachers, siblings, friends . . . the list goes on. But, all too often, we are too distracted to really listen. Hearing is the physical ability to detect noise; whereas, listening involves mental processing, taking in information and making sense out it. It is the same with our ability, or inability, to see. Seeing is a physical ability of those who have been blessed with eyesight. Vision is the ability to give heart and mind to one’s dreams and aspirations. A person may need glas ..read more

The Luxury of Legacy
Gold in September

“If you’re going to live, leave a legacy. Make a mark on the world that can’t be erased.” Maya Angelou By simple definition, a legacy is a gift of money or property, a bequest, or something handed down upon death. Such definition seems a bit antiquated, however, as if a legacy can only be ‘things’ or ‘gifts’ of the past; items, if you will, that can easily be taken, destroyed, or erased. In contrast, last week found us celebrating the gifts of compassion, nurturing, and kindness given by the nurses and teachers we honored with our appreciation; the ongoing legacy of emotion and service by thes ..read more

What Is . . .

. . . hope? Social distancing can not and will not stop the spread of awareness, knowledge, and action. Walking around the neighborhood with my kids last night, I was delighted to see the letters H-O-P-E colorfully painted and hanging in a front window. We stopped to admire the thoughtful handiwork with a smile and, in the moment, truly felt that hope. Though we can’t embrace each other with a normal hug or handshake, we are currently being given an opportunity to plant and spread seeds of hope in our own yard, in our own home, and virtually for our world that will, in one way or another, car ..read more

Gratitude for the Great Gold Team
Gold in September
by Sarah Bartosz

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” Aesop Gold In September was built on hopes that began within the hearts and home of my family; but the truth is that the definition of family has always extended far beyond a single kitchen table to include the family of supporters, donors, volunteers, team members, advocates, and leaders who have helped to guide, encourage, influence, and shape G9. Everyone involved is part of the great gold team of hope. To say I am humbled and honored by the dedication of this team is a tremendous understatement. During these days of great uncertainty felt by all ..read more

The Greatness of Community

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” ~ Coretta Scott King What words can possibly be offered during these current days of fear, uncertainty, disbelief, and confusion? The simple answer: none. As someone who loves words and has used them to lift my spirit and heal my heart during the worst of personal times, I have searched the works of great authors and historians to find meaningful inspiration. But these are unprecedented times and we are all being called upon to write the words that will one day be quoted in the history boo ..read more

Trial And Tribulations…It’s More Than Just Clinical
Gold in September

The term ‘clinical trial’ means many things to many people. For some, the thought of a clinical trial conjures up images of mad scientists and poorly-lit, back-room science experiments; for others, it evokes the impression of brightly lit laboratories with rows of test tubes, microscopes, and petri dishes; but for those who become all-too familiar in the most unwilling of ways, clinical trials are a beacon of hope – a single beam of sunshine miraculously finding its way into a dark room. The National Institutes of Health define a clinical trial as, “A research study in which one or more human ..read more

New Year, New Home . . . Same Heart

“Home is not a place . . . it’s a feeling.” Though my family moved into a new home six months ago, just last week I sent out announcements to folks who may not otherwise have our new address; more specifically, those cards were sent to the thoughtful friends from whom we received Christmas and holiday greetings forwarded from our old address. Of course the basic reasons for my lack of communication are simple and consist of common answers we all use daily: life, family, work, holidays, resolutions made . . . and those perhaps already discarded. Change is often difficult to embrace, regardless ..read more

What if Every Day was TWOsday?

It has been a week since we recognized Giving Tuesday 2019. Each of our newsfeeds and inboxes were a flurry of amazing opportunities to help great causes – organizations and programs that can only fulfil their mission through the support of generous donors. When fighting a foe such as childhood cancer, it can seem a daunting task…as if the funding needs to overcome such an atrocity are just too vast for any one person to overcome. In some ways this is true. Funding research for new childhood cancer therapies is not something that can be realized by just one donation, rather, it takes everyone ..read more
