The lockdown has been a roller coaster of emotions I must say. I was in tears on the day the president announced that the country will be on lockdown for 21 days. Little did I know that it will turn out to be 81 days and still counting. I lost my job in December 2019 so I have been home since the year 2020 started. The prospects of a new job vanished when the COVID-19 pandemic started and that really scared me. I am a mother of a 12-year-old who is going to high school next year so depression slowly started to creep in.  Like any parent would, I started worrying about his future, whether ..read more

Growth during lockdown by Andre George

I’m a sucker for musical theatre and animated musicals. I love the emotion the mediums are able to evoke in the viewer, the messages they are able to carry. One of my favourite animated musicals is The Prince of Egypt (1998) by Dreamworks Animation. Just hearing the first strains of the opening sequence is enough to bring me to tears. The story of how God brought His people out of the slavery in Egypt is an awe-inspiring spectacle of the magnitude of Yahweh. Moses goes from being a refugee infant, to a member of the royal household, to a fugitive, to a leader of His people. Talk about an attac ..read more

Growth during lockdown

Growth is defined as follows: The process of increasing in size. To widen, broaden, increase or see extension. Let’s take it a step further. Personal growth is defined as: The ongoing process of understanding and developing oneself in order to achieve one’s fullest potential. Every season we walk through in life can either grow us or crush us. I am a big fan of growth over being crushed. Whenever a situation presents itself to us we have the incredible opportunity to decide to grow and learn or allow it to defeat us. The key in every season is our attitude. Do we choose to worship Jesus in the ..read more

During lockdown Andre has discovered a new found passion for sourdough bread. It has been quite an adventure witnessing all the false starts and the determination. The final success and the absolute happiness it brought when it arrived. I observed Andre over a three week period with his glass jars, tending, wondering, feeding, googling and worrying. I observed the frustration as each starter turned out to be a false start. After three weeks he arrived at his victory. He had overcome the battle. He had learnt so much and he enjoyed the success of watching his precious starter Denyse, (Sedge-way ..read more

Are you qualified? This is a very prominent question in our society. What qualifications do you have? A question that causes such expectation. If I am not adequately qualified my worth is highly diminished when placed next to someone that is more qualified than I am. Is it your education that qualifies you? The way you look or the clothes you wear? Do you look to your experience? In our society qualification is a desired achievement. All throughout our lives we are directed into the fish pond of higher education. Knowledge will qualify you – we are told. Its such an important part of our lives ..read more

A letter to the Mama in lockdown

Dear Mama in lockdown, Yesterday I gave up. I got up for a few hours to get through Emma’s school work and to send out videos and instructions to the children in my class. It took a short few hours and it was almost more than I could bear so I dropped the guilt climbed into bed and cried myself back to sleep. I only woke up after three in the afternoon. Today I feel much better. You see, dear Mama, the mom-guilt is a million times worse during this period. Suddenly, you are a worker bee in your own hive having to tend to little bodies or “teenagey” ones and maybe both? You no longer have a div ..read more
