This design is fit for any secondary school playground as it reflects the dynamic energy and optimism of teenagers. Given the chance they can produce innovative work to a very high standard. Here is such an example. Having decided on the design of life sized figures here we are positioning the templates in their soon to be new home. - a prominent position in the playground. The designing and making team comprised of the ‘Gifted and Talented GCSE and A level students who spent their art lessons cutting and sticking the mosaic tiles onto these figures. It was very detailed work. What a team ..read more

Mosaic making is really ALL about materials isn't it? Let's face it most mosaic artists are secret horders.  Above is a sample of the treasures i've collected over the years to help inspire the next project. Crockery, keys, coins, plastic buttons, shells, an old necklace, weathered glass collected from many a beach holiday. Often a mosaic course student has arrived with a box of treasures hoping to create something special with their collection.  Is it the opportunity to play that attracts us to the art of mosaic? After all we are piecing together our ideas by playing with the rela ..read more

A celebration of the school moto ( below) was the brief for Pycroft Grange Primary School in Surrey.  So after a drawing day with the children we created this design for a mosaic mural to go on a  playground wall.  Here are some of the children's drawings we had to work with...quirky, creative, vibrant.  And here is an example of how we translated some of  the drawings into mosaic, of course with the children's help. They chose the tile colours and did  the delicate gluing work onto mesh.  A real team effort.  Installation is more tricky so wit ..read more

Public Art mosaics are versatile, colourful and a great way to engage communities.  Here are two examples of very different community art projects commissioned by Groundwork - an organisation that supports communities to look after their local green spaces.  Firstly here is the Grand Union Canal in Northolt, Middlesex. A major regeneration by British Waterways of their canal bridges led to the commission of this artwork.  We brightened up this underpass with a series of mosaic panels based on the theme of Barge Art.  Young people at a local youth project helped design and ..read more

Springwell Special School, Southampton really is a special place. Very supportive staff and happy children with great facilities.  To celebrate the new school building the children helped design a school logo.  Here is the original drawing selected to be the unique branding for the school. This is the drawing transformed into a 2 metrex 2 metre wall mosaic for the sunny entrance area.  The children helped make the rainbow by carefully gluing the colourful glass tiles onto a mesh. Working together in the classroom making sections at a time, slowly but surely. They also helped c ..read more
