I recently spoke at USC and shared with the students what it looks like from my end as the employer when we open up an internship for applications. They were RIVETED, because they said they really want that visibility into how everyone else is applying to these roles. So I had a bit of fun, and came up with the 5 types of internship applications a company receives. I went through all of our internships applications and calculated the percentage of applications that fit into each category. I’ll detail the pros and cons of each type and give you examples of how your peers are applying for intern ..read more

Here’s when an internship is a good idea and when it isn’t

If your plan and aspiration is to embark on a professional career in a corporate-type environment then I would be hard pressed to argue against pursuing a summer internship opportunity. I’ll briefly explain why then let’s consider some alternatives. Completing a summer internship is largely inconsequential in my opinion from the perspective of building knowledge and expertise in your chosen field. What you will learn in the span of ten weeks or so, while significant relative to your knowledge base on day one, is frankly minuscule relative to what you will learn once you embark on your full-tim ..read more

The unpaid internship discourse is back again. In a disseminated jobs market and age where finding the right place to get your foot in the door might be difficult, there’s always a not-so-healthy discussion that takes place over whether unpaid internships are actually worth it. Those that have taken unpaid internships will tell you that it builds character and the experience is all that matters. On the other side is those that say you should know your worth and that work should never be for free, even if it’s at the place you always wanted to be. This debate surfaced once again on Monday when ..read more
