Title: King of Pride Author: Ana Huang Release Date: 27 April 2023 Rating: 3/5 stars The first word that popped into my mind after I finished this book was “meh“. I would consider myself a fan of Ana Huang but after reading the 6th book where she uses the same formula once again, it’s hard to find something entirely unique and special about this book. I will admit that she mixes it up slightly in this book by having Kai be a gentleman but that’s about it. I can easily say that he’s the most stable out of the bunch of male protagonists in the Twisted universe but that might ..read more

Title: Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1) Author: Leigh Bardugo Release Date: 8 October 2019 Rating: 4/5 stars “Mors irrumat omnia. Death fucks us all.” I did not expect this book to contain such heavy themes. There were many things about this book I didn’t expect but I didn’t anticipate how dark it would be. I notoriously shy away from any media containing stories related to drugs or rape but lo and behold, this book contained both of those and more. However, by the time I fully encountered these themes, it was far too late for me to give up on this book since Ms. Bardugo had ..read more

The Way of Kings, pt. 2 by Brandon Sanderson

“For the substance of our existence is not in the achievement, but in the method.” Few people other than Brandon Sanderson could write an epic fantasy story quite like this one. The most common mistake writers make when writing large stories about war is that they forget to focus on the small details. By writing epic stories, they tend to get lost in the scope of the conflict and forget the most important thing that makes authentic war stories compelling: human struggle. There is no shortage of struggle in this book, whether it be physical or mental, and that is what brings this story alive ..read more

Title: The Way of Kings, Pt. 1 Author: Brandon Sanderson Release Date: 31 August 2010 Rating: 4,5/5 stars “Cowardice can imitate heroism if given no where to flee.” This is my third (ish) Brandon Sanderson book and it seems like his books can do no wrong. When I tell you that I’ve never been disappointed by one of his books, I really mean it. The heavy worldbuilding during the start was a bit of a chore to get through but it’s part of the deal when reading epic fantasy. Once I got through the first 150 pages, I really started to get into the world and story. Kaladin’s sto ..read more

The Stand by Stephen King

Title: The Stand Author: Stephen King Release Date: 1 January 1978 Rating: 4/5 stars “The place where you made your stand never mattered. Only that you were there…and still on your feet.” I’m not afraid to admit it: I’m a scared cat. I’m scared of most insects (especially spiders), heights, and Stephen King books so thick they could easily be used as a murder weapon. I’m incredibly proud to pronounce that I’ve conquered one of those fears! The Stand is easily the longest book I’ve ever read. The only book that comes close is Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas. This book cons ..read more

“You are an opus all on your own.” Title: Things I Overshared (Heartlanders, #2) Author: Kelsey Humphreys Release Date: 6 December 2022 Rating: 3,5/5 stars Have you ever gotten that feeling that you’re too much? That you’re too loud and you dress too boldly? Sam Canton knows precisely how you feel, especially compared to her quiet, grumpy (and British) coworker, Emerson Clark. This book doesn’t shy away from the fact that it uses well-known tropes such as the infamous grumpy-vs-sunshine characters, not to mention the fact that Emerson so happens to be a billionaire, but m ..read more

I think we’ve already established that I love disaster movies. However, this film might just be an exception to that rule. This movie faintly resembles the disaster novel I started to write at the young age of 11. This movie had all the aspects of danger, disaster, and conflict I included in my book, including the fact that no one knew how or why the world was ending, including myself. The apocalyptic disaster in this film was there just to add danger, there was no explanation or reasoning for the weird things happening and as a disaster-movie-nerd, this does NOT sit well with me. Another aspe ..read more

Sci-fi served with a side of horror

This show had the unfortunate fate of being the first show I watched after 1899 and it definitely had a lot to live up to. I saw the trailer for this show about a year ago as I was lounging on Youtube and it immediately caught my attention. Mystery and death can be quite intriguing on their own but on the Moon? That ups the ante considerably. Much like 1899, The Silent Sea is a mystery that is still being unraveled until the very last minute of the very last episode. In a cramped setting where any wrong move can easily kill you and trust is betrayed left and right, the plot of this show can ea ..read more

Mysterious to the very end

It’s been a while since a television show has intrigued me as much as 1899 has. There are many shows that try to establish a mystery and keep their audience on their toes, but not many of them manage to do this quite like 1899. This show takes its time by establishing the relationships between its vast cast and scattering clues throughout. I would say that watching this requires some patience but the intrigue is so strong that it doesn’t take much to remain interested. Adding the dark feel and look of the show, as well as the futuristic yet somehow historically-fitting soundtrack, this piece o ..read more
