I just want to let you all know that I am fine, staying at home, using mask and gloves when I have to go out, and continuing to paint. I hope everyone out there is practicing social distancing, and wearing gloves, and mask if you have one. I am waiting for a HEPA filter vacuum bag to come in from ebay to make a mask. I have a woodworking mask, but its elastics are comming apart. My husband has a couple of masks coming in from Home Depot, which should be here before I can make my mask, because the vacuum bags won’t be here before April 23. In case any of you are DYI types, here are some urls t ..read more

Mystery Artist Contest

On my website, I usually just put the bare bones information about a painting, like dimensions and a link to Etsy or WP Shop. But when I write the descriptions of the paintings in my stores, if they are reproductions of another artist’s paintings, I put that in the description. Well, I painted a reproduction quite a while ago, and I can’t remember who the artist was. I put a photo of this painting below. Maybe somebody out there can identify the artist for me. My ex-husband made the frame and I put the matting on, but the batik design is a reproduction of another artist. The first person to t ..read more

A Tremor That Came and Went

Something that very few people know is that I have had a tremor in my right hand for a few years that has worsened so much over the past 6 months that I have had to steady my right hand with my left in order to paint. It was extremely frustrating, and had me to the point of crying sometimes. I almost gave up trying to paint. Instead, I figured that there must be something a doctor could do. So, I went to a neurologist, and after a bunch of tests, (hoping that I wouldn’t be told that I had Parkinsons), I was told that I had benign essential tremor syndrome. And, luckily, there was a med ..read more

Florals Galor

For the past month, I have been painting small 11″ x 14″ and 8″ x 10″ floral paintings. All have been on smooth 1/4″ birch plywood. Some covered with linen. I prefer painting on the smooth wood because the texture of the linen interferes with my strokes. I am experimenting with different backgrounds, such as St. Andrew’s Cross, diagonals, multicolored, and impressionistic. The flowers are all representational. Below, are my most current floral paintings: Flower Painting Rose Blue BackgroundFloral Painting, Pink Rose, Impressionistic Blue BackgroundFloral White And Peach Roses Painting on ..read more

Art From the Mediterranean

When I went to the Mediterranean, I took many photos of renaissance and pre-renaissance paintings at a variety of places, including the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, and The Borghese Gallery. I wasn’t allowed to take photos of the Sistine Chapel itself because of the crowds. I also took many more photos than I am posting here, but those were taken by my shaky hand (not a beneficial thing for an artist), and not worth looking at. There is a 7 second delay between the change from one photo to the next. Art from the Mediterranean ..read more

Half Tone Blending

I promised to add a short video on half tone blending. Half tone blending is when you place a tone that is half way between two colors in the middle of them. This is done instead of the typical way of blending so that the colors stay bright instead of toned down. Below, is a short video on how to half tone blend. Half Tone Blending Demo ..read more

Portrait Painting of Jacques Barenton

I have just finished painting the portrait of Jacques Barenton, originally painted by John Singer Sargent. For this portrait, I concentrated on using halftones as an alternative to blending, which is the way used by many of today’s top painters. A halftone can be explained this way: if you strike one color on the canvas, and then strike another tone of that color beside it, you can mix a tone that is halfway between each of the strikes and paint that between them. This gives the appearance of being blended, but without the dulling of the color that happens during blending. I’ll probably write ..read more

Art Seminar

I will be leaving Monday, September 2nd to drive up to Sydney, Nebraska, where I will take a 4 day seminar with David Jansen. The subject is “color”, a subject that I am well acquainted with. However, I have been studying with David Jansen for about 18 months in order to gain knowledge about painting florals without doing a realistic copy from a still life setup or photo. The posts about the CNC Tray and “New Floral Painting of Roses with Blue Blossoms” are samples of representational paintings without the help of a still life setup or photo. I will be back on September 12th, and will cont ..read more

Original Red Roses Painting
Tetrault Art Studio Blog
by Velvet Tetrault

This is a new painting of red roses. I found red roses to be much more challenging than other colored roses because of the challenge of making the petals distinct. To go lighter with red, mixing white only makes pink, not a lighter red. I mixed some hansa yellow with napthol red light to make a slightly orange color that looks “lighter” than the napthol red light. I used a red violet color for the shadows. Floral painting of red roses ..read more
