Can I quietly admit that when we first got these games we played it wrong because someone (me) didn’t read the instructions? They’re puzzles for kids, how hard can they be? Anyway…We recently celebrated Abi’s 9th birthday with cake and the usual stuff (I kill plants, so I’m not sure how my kids managed to survive until 9 and 12!). Among the gifts she received two puzzles, Smart Games IQ XOXO and IQ Puzzler PRO. I’m not going to tell you these things are magic, but… I came downstairs one morning shortly after we got them and BOTH GIRLS were sitting quietly at the table playing. I don’t know ab ..read more

How do unschooled kids learn to read?

Unschooled kids learn to read the same way they learn anything – when they’re ready and interested. That’s how child-led learning works. As parents our philosophy on learning to read is – reading is the fundamental basis of pretty much all learning. If you can read, you can learn anything. We’ve approached learning to read as unschooling parents as well as regular homeschoolers. Eldest was taught to read before we discovered unschooling so her experience was vastly different from Abi’s and, if I had it to do again, I’d change every part of it. As an unschoolers, Abi learned to read much later ..read more

One thing I miss since the digital revolution is all the newspaper I used to have. These days it’s something we have to rush around to find while the paper mâché glue cools. In part two we’re going to mix our paper mâché paste and stick the paper to the form. It’s messy business, but someone’s got to do it. If you haven’t seen part 1 of Abi’s Mt Everest diorama making adventure, you can do that now. What you’re going to need 1/2 cup boiled tap water 1/2 cup plain flour 1 tablespoon salt (the salt inhibits mould growth) Let’s get started! 1. Put the flour and salt to a heat proof bowl. 2. This isn’t what I thought homeschooling would be

Way back before my kids were born I began thinking about homeschooling. I had this idealised version of what it would be like in my head and it was beautiful. What homeschooling actually turned out to be is totally not that. We would turn the spare room of our two bedroom flat into a little school. There’d be a blackboard, little tables and chairs. Everything was going to be bright and cheerful. Also, the kids were going to do exactly what I said when I said it – like I said, I didn’t have kids at this point. The whole thing was very Little House on the Prairie. Turns out my actual kids don’t ..read more

Mt Everest diorama part 1

Earlier in the year we were tossing around ideas for projects that we could base our 2020 Home Education Unit reports on. Having looked at the QLD curriculum for grade 4 I suggested a diorama of…somewhere…for geography. I’d been thinking of somewhere Australia to tied in with environmental sustainability, but Abi piped up and said she wanted to create a Mt Everest diorama. Why not? Coincidentally, Mt Everest has been cropping up in the news a lot lately – 11 tonnes of rubbish and who knows how many bodies. This morning, while we were getting ready to start our diorama, National Geographic rele ..read more
