Winterlicious – Is It Worth It?

Do you want to do Winterlicious? I didn’t until the right experience came along   I was never a fan of Winterlicious. The two-week festival (and its cousin Summerlicious) were initially created as a way to attract diners during slower seasons. To entice new diners you need great food, a great atmosphere, and a reasonable price point. I, however, found none of these things the last time I participated.   The food didn’t taste very fresh, the flavour was subpar and the dining experience was non-existent – that is until they wanted to rush us out the door, no doubt in favour of the next ..read more

Christmas In Vancouver, Is It Worth It?
49 Budget Travellers

Christmas has a bad rap.    It’s the one day most envision as the priciest, the most time consuming and stressful day of the year to travel.    But while I completely dismissed travel at Christmas (opting instead to travel in the first two weeks of December when flight costs to Europe get especially low) this year I discovered a few things that challenged my thinking. As a result, I spent Christmas (and New Years Eve) this year in Vancouver.    Now that the holiday is almost over, I thought I’d take a look back to assess two things. 1. Is traveling during Christm ..read more

The best way to get around Cuba’s capital is unconventionally. Ok, so the title on this one is a bit of a head-scratcher, in particular for Canadians, who make up the largest chunk of Cuba’s visitors. In a colorful town like Havana, with its Coco taxis, convertible taxis, horse-drawn carriages, and heck even those questionable looking (and potentially illegal?) Bicitaxis, why on earth would you view the city in the most conventional tourist ride to exist? Well in a place like Havana, the conventional takes a turn to become the unconventional option. Let’s get real for a second: Canadians are ..read more

49 Budget Travellers

What’s your dream trip? Do you want to travel somewhere far away that fascinates you? Or maybe you have a specific bucket list item to cross off?  Now what’s stopping you from making it?  There are so many reasons why your dream trip is out of reach: family, professional obligations, bad timing or fear. But today I want to talk about one common hurdle for most: money.  “Are you joking? It’ll cost too much! Who’s going to pay my rent while I’m gone?”  If this is you, I don’t blame you for this way of thinking. For me, this was how I felt about Japan.  I treated it ..read more

How else can you spend a lazy day on a budget with friends, than cycling from one winery to another tasting the best of the summer wines that Niagara has to offer. The question however is, where do I go? How do I get there? How much does it cost? Where else to start than the Niagara Wine Region.  This is situated in Canada’s largest megalopolis  – The Golden Horseshoe. There are approximately 88  wineries in the Niagara region.  The itinerary below is a recommendation based on reputable wineries within easy commute distance of each other within their respective areas. Expect wine tasting to take about 30 – 45 mins per winery, budget more time if you are taking a tour. Budget between $5 to $15 at each location for tasting a flight of wine between 3 to 5 samples. Allow about 15 minutes to get from one winery to the next on the list. Day 1 – Beamsville Thirty Bench Winemakers: 4281 Mountainview Road, Beamsville. Angels Gate: 4260 Mountainview Road, B ..read more

Fourth of July in Toronto – Things to do
49 Budget Travellers
by Blake C. Britt

Its the Fourth of July – and Toronto, Canada is firmly on the map.  Toronto is one of the fastest growing cities in North America and the home to the Toronto Raptors – the 2019 NBA Champions. What better time to find out what the fuss is about than a visit during the Fourth of July long weekend. Toronto has been home to me for the past 5 years and I have thoroughly enjoyed exploring places such as Little Italy, Kensington Market, and The Distillery district.  There is so much to do here that I realize its quite a feat to capture the essence of the city in 4 – 5 days. Here I will give ..read more
