Hunting Scent Blocker Versus Scent Eliminator
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC

There are two ways to stop odor from negatively affecting the deer. A hunting scent blocker versus a scent eliminator. Let’s start with scent elimination. This is what products like our Whitetail Alchemy Liqwid Ozone do. They actually destroy the odor molecule, ripping it apart by oxidizing the molecule. The odor cannot return. It will not escape encapsulation and it will not find its way past a cover scent. The odor is gone, it no longer produces a smell. This GREATLY reduces your odor foot print while in the deer woods. Scent blocking is the process of covering up an odor. We do make se ..read more

Interdigital Gland of Deer
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI

The interdigital gland of deer is probably the least understood of all the glands (metatarsal in whitetails is a close second). There are some articles online that contain bad information and I hope maybe to clear that up. The interdigital gland is located between the “toes” of the whitetail deer, one on each foot. It has a very characteristic odor. It is thick and yogurt-like and has an odor much like strong cheese with a touch of garlic or skunk. It is by far the worst smelling of the glands and in making the synthetic version, it can really overpower you fast. It is a gland deer use to comm ..read more

Mock Deer Scrape
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC

There is a mock deer scrape on my property I made last year. It wasn’t getting much action since it was buried under the snow (although they did dig up some others through the snow). I went up to plant some trees, both Black Hills Spruce and Swamp White Oaks, on Saturday. I took the opportunity to refresh this particular scrape with Lucky 7 Mock Scrape Magic, our new advanced scent powder. It has the scent of perfected tarsal gland, pheromones and urine that both stays fresh and ages at the same time. This is thanks to some great chemistry used in its formulation, and we are the only ones to e ..read more

What is a Mock Scrape?
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI
2y ago
What is a Mock Scrape? A mock scrape is simply a reproduction of a natural scrape made by deer. Most hunters make them to hang a trail camera or to hunt over. You simply create one by scraping a spot on the ground about 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet in size. Add your favorite scent, hang your camera or set up your stand nearby. When should you make a mock scrape? Many people think only bucks make scrapes and that they only make them leading up to the rut. This is untrue. Deer utilize scrapes all year long, although for different reasons at different times. Where is the best place to put a mock scrape ..read more

Synthetic Deer Urine – Choose the Best
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI

Synthetic deer urine can be excellent. The problem is it can also be terrible. So how do you pick a synthetic scent product? Follow some of the guidelines below. What defines synthetic deer urine? This is the biggest issue a person must face when selecting scents. Because they are synthetic products, you can define the formula as anything you want. Just because someone calls it a synthetic urine, it unfortunately does not mean it is anything like the real thing. It could be an ammonia and water concoction with not much else in it other than yellow coloring. Are deer attracted to such a cheap f ..read more

Do Deer Scents Actually Work?
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI

There is one question I see online a lot, on both Facebook and various deer hunting message boards. Do Deer Scents Actually Work? First, let’s mention the two basic types of deer scents people think about. These would be urine/ glandular based scents and food based scents. Each is very different in its usage and should be considered separately from each other. In this article, we will be discussing urine scents and glandular secretions. Food based attractants can be great, for sure, but that is another topic for another day. Deer communicate through the odor and chemical composition of their u ..read more

Doe Bleat Call and Synthetic Scents
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI

The doe bleat call (or doe grunt) can be a very effective tool in a hunter’s arsenal. Using a doe call during the pre-rut/ rut period can bring in dominant bucks that may ignore a buck grunt. After all, they are looking for does to breed, the fights are secondary. These types of calls can also be especially effective during the later or repeat rut periods when does who “missed” come back into estrus. Just remember, having a buck hear your bleat is one thing; it is another to successfully get him into range for a bow or crossbow. Doe vocalizations during hunting should be used sparingly. Curiosity Deer Scents??? – NO!
Nelson Creek Outdoors LLC
by BrianWI

Curiosity deer scents seem to be all the rage. JUST SAY NO! Think about it, a curious deer is an alert deer, not a calm one. Curiosity is not attraction. Instead, the deer are checking out something foreign that they do not recognize that is in their territory. These curiosity deer lures are not what you want and could hurt your chances at a quality buck. Curious deer are investigating the bad deer lure and on high alert! Wise deer, like the big dominant buck you are chasing, may spook and never return. We have talked about our three-tiered approach to creating synthetic deer scents. Correct o ..read more
